BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Public Television, Check local listings

This week, Bill Moyers speaks with Bill McKibben, the author and activist who has become an ardent environmentalist. At the moment, McKibben is focusing on the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline – the subject of a new State Department environmental impact study. Before Congress gets a chance to debate its results, McKibben is calling on President Obama to reject the project and defy the powerful oil company lobbyists. Moyers & Company airs from Friday to Sunday on local public TV stations; to find it in your local area, click the BillMoyers.com website.

NBC, 7:30 p.m. ET

The Opening Ceremonies are presented tonight – with an opportunity to set the stage, emotionally as well as competitively, for the XXII Olympic Winter Games to come. Six years ago, at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, China used the Opening Games to present an extraordinary exhibition of pomp and circumstance from Beijing. The most recent Winter Games, from Vancouver in 2010, was, by comparison, more of a high school talent show affair – and London’s Summer Games of 2012 opened with an odd mixture of images evoking both James Bond and the Teletubbies. Tonight, Russia has the chance to counter all the initial negative publicity from Sochi – crummy hotel rooms, erratic plumbing, isolated venues – with an Opening Ceremonies spectacle, but only if it comes off as more impressive than oppressive. Meanwhile, at least one world leader won’t be watching from the bleachers this time: President Obama has opted to stay home.

PBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

As part of Black History month, PBS and American Masters present this biography of Alice Walker – the first such film study of the author of The Color Purple. The film is written, produced and directed by Pratibha Parmar. Check local listings.

Starz!, 9:00 p.m. ET

This unorthodox, unforgettable film series by writer-director Richard Linklater is a true collaboration with his leading actors, Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke. The films are about the love and evolving relationship between Delpy’s Celine and Hawke’s Jesse, a story first told in 1995’s Before Sunrise. Next, nine years later, came 2004’s Before Sunset, followed another nine years later by this 2013 continuation of their story. When we first saw them in this (so far) trilogy, they met on a train in Vienna. Now they’re at the end of a summer vacation in Greece, with lots of complicated issues and relationships confronting them as the trip nears its conclusion.

HBO, 10:00 p.m. ET

Tonight’s scheduled guests on this new outing include Top Chef judge Tom Colicchio and conservative humorist P.J. O’Rourke. Oh, and some politicians, too.
