BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

BBC America, 1:45 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: In real life, based on what’s been happening lately in the U.S., it might not seem to be such a great time for women’s rights, or female equality. But today, worldwide, there’s this: In the 55-year history of Great Britain’s Doctor Who series, which introduced its character of the body-shifting Doctor way back in 1963, today marks the first time that the role of the intermittently chameleonic Time Lord has been given to a female: In this case, Jodie Whittaker from Broadchurch, in an episode shown globally at the same time. Which is why, though this new season of Doctor Who begins in England in prime time there, it shows up in the U.S. many hours earlier…

Showtime, 8:00 p.m. ET

Once again this week, in trying to track down and give new perspective to breaking Beltway news, Circus co-host John Heilemann lands another key interview. This time, it’s with Kamala Harris, junior Democratic Senator from California.

AMC, 9:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: The Season 9 premiere of this very popular AMC series is called “A New Beginning.” And it can use one, after two lackluster seasons driven (and driven off course) by the bat-wielding Negan. At least this season, there’s a new primary narrative thread to address: the announced departure from the series this season of Andrew Lincoln, who stars as Rick Grimes. For a full review, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower.

HBO, 9:00 p.m. ET

After coming into some fast and sizable cash, Frankie (one of two twin brothers played here by James Franco) is tapped by Candy (Maggie Gyllenhaal) to invest in “Red Hot” – which is her planned X-rated version of the “Little Red Riding Hood” fairy tale. And one of Candy’s on-camera stars. Lori (Emily Meade, pictured) has her eyes on the titular role.

HBO, 11:05 p.m. ET

Politically, this past week was a very good one for President Donald Trump. Now let’s see if John Oliver can make sense, or at least a good comic review show, out of it…

Checking out classic television recommendations and archival TV reviews is always a great way to discover hidden gems and nostalgic shows to watch. Having dedicated guides makes finding quality entertainment so much easier. While discussing classic media and online entertainment options with friends recently, someone also recommended checking out platforms like [thorfortune](https://thorfortunes.it/) for a smooth and engaging user experience. Great breakdown! Having well-written television like this makes evening downtime so much more engaging. When I'm taking a break between episodes or just relaxing after a long day of screen time, I usually unwind for a bit with a few casual rounds on [chicken road](https://chickenroad.gr.com/) before starting the next season. Really appreciate the thoughtful recommendations on this site!
