American Pharaoh has a shot today at completing horse racing’s Triple Crown – and becoming the first horse to do so since the Carter Administration. (That’s the era, not the horse. The last Triple Crown winner was Affirmed, in 1978.)

THE JUDGE

HBO, 8:00 p.m. ET

This 2014 drama, about a big-city lawyer returning to his small town and defending his father, a respected judge, who’s accused of murder, is a powerhouse display of assured acting styles. Robert Duvall plays the father, Robert Downey Jr. the son – and really, what more do you need to say? How about this: Co-stars include Vincent D’Onofrio, Vera Farmiga and Billy Bob Thornton.

BEGIN AGAIN

Showtime, 8:00 p.m. ET

Writer-director John Carney, creator of Once, taps into the restorative and emotional powers of musical collaboration once again. This time, in this 2014 film, it’s about a dismissed music executive (Mark Ruffalo) who finds inspiration in the music, and promise, of a young singer-songwriter (Keira Knightley).

ORPHAN BLACK

BBC America, 9:00 p.m. ET

How could this season pack any more surprises into its narrative? Well, tonight, it does, fleshing out a mysterious image from the season premiere: Another of Tatiana Maslany’s clones. This one, introduced officially tonight, is a blonde, named Krystal.

THE GRAHAM NORTON SHOW

BBC America, 10:00 p.m. ET

Melissa McCarthy, Jude Law and Chris Pratt are all on the couch tonight – and while you might expect McCarthy to dominate all the comic proceedings, The Graham Norton Show always has some surprises up its sleeve. And tonight, they include Jurassic World star Chris Pratt doing his spot-on accent of some young people from Essex in a British TV show he watched for months when working overseas – a show he described as the local Jersey Shore.
