BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

CBS All Access, 3:00 a.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: CBS All Access is promoting this show in an unusual way, boasting that it’s a TV drama series in which you can watch the episodes in any order, and it won’t affect your enjoyment or understanding of the show. What a bold, groundbreaking concept, being able to watch any episode of a cop drama in any order. You mean, like Mannix?

NBC, 8:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: Michael Schur’s The Good Place ended last Thursday – superbly – but NBC isn’t depriving us of him completely on Thursday nights. Tonight, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which Schur co-created with Daniel J. Goor, presents its Season 7 premiere on NBC. And it returns with a slight shakeup: Captain Holt, played to dry perfection by Andre Braugher, is back on the street, demoted from captain to patrolman. The last time Braugher played a cop on the streets, he was a detective on Homicide: Life on the Street. And not nearly as funny… because at the time, he was among the greatest dramatic actors on TV. For a review of Thursday night series and season debuts, see Mike Hughes' Open Mike

CNN, 8:00 p.m. ET

The second day of CNN’s New Hampshire town halls, featuring one-hour visits with Democratic candidates vying for a spot in the 2020 presidential race, begins at 8 p.m. ET with Bernie Sanders, followed by Pete Buttigieg at 9 p.m. ET, Amy Klobuchar at 10 p.m. ET, and Deval Patrick at 11 p.m. ET.

CBS, 10:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Edie Falco goes from cable TV to broadcast, starring as an LAPD police chief in this new cop series from Paul Attanasio. She’s great, but the scripts of the opening shows are not quite up to her level. Even so, Tommy is a series that’s noteworthy for more than one reason. For my full review on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross, listen to today’s show, or visit the Fresh Air website afterward. And for reviews on TV Worth Watching, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower and Mike Hughes' Open Mike.

USA, 10:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Rosario Dawson stars in this new series, a collaboration between Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot) and Andy the Greenwald. She plays an investigator returning to her small town after the mysterious and brutal death of her younger sister. It’s based on a novel by Ross Thomas, and is presented as a 10-part self-contained serialized story –  the first of a projected series anthology with a new story each year, akin to Fargo. For a full review, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower.
