BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Fox, 8:00 p.m. ET

Bruce Wayne is beginning to look a bit batty, Selina is starting to act much more catty, and while the future Riddler remains on ice, the once and future Penguin, Oswald Cobblepot, is running things in Gotham, and continuing to flex his muscles. Or, metaphorically, his useless Penguin wings. Tonight, Fox tries to appeal to younger viewers by casting MTV Teen Wolf co-star Crystal Reed in a prominent new role: the daughter of former Gotham mob boss Falcone, whose daughter Sofia, played by Reed, is planned as the somewhat amoral new love interest for Gordon.

NBC, 8:30 p.m. ET

To say that The Good Place has reinvented itself this season would be a severe understatement. Two weeks ago, in the Season 2 premiere, it reinvented itself from top to bottom – by revealing that the “good place” actually was a sort of hell, and Kristen Bell’s Eleanor and the others were being emotionally tortured by this new hell’s devilish architect, Michael (played by Ted Danson). Last week, after Eleanor had discovered the ruse, Danson’s determined demon tried, tried again, by rebooting everyone’s memories and tweaking his, and their, vision of “the good peace.” And when he failed a second time, he tried, tried again – hundreds of times in last week’s episode alone, in a sort of Groundhog Day in Hell exercise in futility. So now what? More than with almost any other comedy on TV, I have no idea. But I’m fascinated…

ABC, 9:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: This is not a recommendation. For those who care (and I do not count myself among them, so I’ll keep this brief), Scandal returns tonight with its Season 7 premiere.

NBC, 9:00 p.m. ET

Last week, its return to NBC prime time, after so many years away, was a big deal. This week, Will & Grace already seems like a familiar and long-standing part of the current media landscape. That could be equal parts compliment and insult, so we’ll see how the next few episodes play out.

Fox, 9:01 p.m. ET

Tonight’s episode has Seth MacFarlane’s captain meeting, and becoming quite enamored of, the attractive captain of a mining space ship, whose intriguing name is Pria Lavesque. And why not? Pria is played by the very beautiful, and obviously game, Charlize Theron, MacFarlane’s former cinematic co-star in his 2014 Western movie comedy, A Million Ways to Die in the West.
