Frank Capra directed this 1941 classic, about a man (Gary Cooper) whose personal philosophy sounds positively Buddhist: to protest certain conditions, he threatens to commit suicide publicly. Except this “John Doe” didn’t exist, until Cooper’s character was persuaded to embody him – and a media storm erupts around him. Also erupting around him: Barbara Stanwyck, at her most beautiful. David Bianculli has been a TV critic since 1975, including a 14-year stint at the New York Daily News, and sees no reason to stop now. Currently, he's TV critic for NPR's Fresh Air with Terry Gross, and is an occasional substitute host for that show.
