BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

CBS, 8:00 p.m. ET

SERIES FINALE: As a storyteller, How I Met Your Mother has spun its titular narrative out with more determination and persistence than Scheherazade. But tonight, it ends, and we get caught up with this final, expanded episode. The final scene with the kids was filmed years ago, so at least this show’s creators knew where they were going. And tonight, with a mixture of comedy and pathos, we get there.

CBS, 9:01 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Hoping to cash in on the big audience attracted by the How I Met Your Mother finale, CBS uses the time slot immediately following it to launch a new sitcom featuring young people who hang together whenever possible, despite having separate lives. It’s a wasted opportunity, however. This new series, based on its concept and content, may as well have been titled ‘Friends’ with Worse Writers. This is not a recommendation. It’s a warning. Run away, run away.

NBC, 10:00 p.m. ET

Now that Elizabeth (Megan Boone) finally has been confronted with the proof that her husband, Tom (Ryan Eggold), is a traitor, what’s a betrayed bride to do? Why, renew her vows, of course. Keep your friends close, your enemies closer, and your enemy spouses closest of all…

Showtime, 11:00 p.m. ET

Tonight’s new installment of David Steinberg’s wonderful talk show about comedy features two brilliant performers who, like him, developed their chops at Second City: Fred Willard in Chicago, Catherine O’Hara in Toronto. In the Seventies, they starred in two of the most hilarious low-budget TV shows ever made, both of them syndicated: Willard in Fernwood 2-Night, O’Hara as one of the founding members of SCTV. Covering their careers since then could easily fill separate full-length documentary salutes, so as Steinberg chats with them both during the same half hour, strap in and hold on.

CBS, 12:35 a.m. ET

I don’t remember Craig Ferguson, in all these years, ever having a guest host – but tonight, as part of a one-day switcheroo with his former Drew Carey Show co-star and buddy, Ferguson takes tonight off. In his place? Drew Carey, spending time with Carl Reiner, Joan Jett and Cleveland author and journalist Connie Schultz. And since this show airs after midnight, on April Fool’s Day, it’s a same-day trade, because later that same day, Ferguson takes over Carey’s The Price Is Right for a one-day stint. What a deal!
