BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

BBC America, 1:00 p.m. ET

Starting at 1 p.m. ET, to celebrate Halloween, Doctor Who is presenting a mini-marathon of some of its scariest episodes of the modern era – and if you’re a Who fan, you know that can be pretty spooky stuff indeed. Truly, it’s a wonderful daytime warmup to the evening’s festivities – and it culminates in an all-new episode at 9 p.m. ET. Watch, in particular, for “Blink” (pictured) at 7 pm. ET – and don’t blink while you watch it, or…

NBC, 12:00 p.m. ET

Here’s a first: It’s the first time a U.S. broadcast network has presented live coverage of the Rugby World Cup. This year it’s Australia vs. New Zealand, and if you’ve never watched a rugby match, imagine a cross between football and hot potato, with no concerns whatsoever about concussions or, for the most part, rules.

FX, 6:00 p.m. ET

If you’ve been watching Fox’s new Scream Queens series, and especially if you haven’t, you might be interested in watching today’s Halloween marathon. Starting at 6 p.m. ET, Fox’s sister network, FX, is repeating every episode aired to date of this campy, intermittently clever series. Emma Roberts (pictured) and Jamie Lee Curtis star.

Fox, 8:00 p.m. ET

The New York Mets, playing its first World Series game at Citi Field, managed to beat the Kansas City Royals 9-3, and reduce its deficit in games in this series to 2-1. Timely hitting, and especially strong pitching, was the key – and if the Mets can cast that same magic again tonight, then the series will be tied 2-2, and we’ll be set for one compelling postseason battle.

Starz!, 9:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Well, this was a long time coming. The original The Evil Dead movie, an audacious mix of horror and comedy, was made by director Sam Raimi in 1981, starring a young Bruce Campbell as Ash, whose incantation of an ancient curse releases evil in the form of very persistent possessed people – and corpses. The photography and special effects were inventive and playful, and, in the eventual cinematic sequels, including 1997’s Evil Dead II and 1992’s Army of Darkness, so was the acting. Campbell, recently co-starring in USA Network’s Burn Notice, matured into the role of the weary, cranky, wise-cracking, cowardly semi-hero – a sort of low-budget Jim Rockford. And now, on Starz, he has a sequel TV series reprising the role of Ash, and surrounding him with his own veritable Scooby gang of demon fighters. I’ve seen the first two episodes, and they’re good fun – especially on Halloween. And yes, Sam Raimi is still along for the ride: He directed and co-wrote the premiere. For a full review, see Ed Bark’s Uncle Barky’s Bytes.

Sundance, 10:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: There’s understandable confusion about this series, and its U.S.-made variant presented by A&E. But trust me: This French series, shown on Sundance with subtitles, is the original article, and by far the best one. Last season, The Returned was all about an isolated town bordering a man-made lake, and how long-dead people began suddenly returning to their former town and homes. Season 2 begins with the town still trying to understand, and deal with, that unsettling phenomenon – and Halloween is the perfect night for The Returned to… return.

You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this matter to be actually something which I think I would never understand. It seems too complex and extremely broad for me. I am looking forward for your next post, I will try to get the hang of it!
