BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Fox, 9:00 p.m. ET

The Cookie continues to not crumble, in this second episode of Season 2, in which one of the subplots is Ludacris. That’s not a misspelled complaint – he's one of the week’s guest stars.

PBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

Naturalist and author E.O. Wilson, whose studies of insect behavior over the decades has prompted some to call him a modern Darwin, is profiled in this two-hour biography of the man and his groundbreaking findings about the sociology in anthills and other insect cultures. Check local listings.

CBS, 10:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: This is a warning, not a recommendation. The actors starring in this new medical series, Marcia Gay Harden and Luis Guzman, are very good. In other things. But even they can’t elevate the script to tolerable levels here, in a show about a hospital so constantly overstressed it occasionally goes into the patient-care equivalent of cardiac arrest. If Harden, in particular, makes you want to tune in, in this case I’d advise against it.

Comedy Central, 10:00 p.m. ET

In this week’s episode, South Park gets gentrified – leading to local commission hearings that may remind some viewers of HBO’s recent David Simon miniseries, Show Me a Hero. Or not. Either way, expect to laugh.

Comedy Central, 11:00 p.m. ET

The first two interviews conducted by the new Daily Show host have been, in a word, dull. Tonight, though, is Noah’s first interview with a politician: New Jersey Governor and Republican presidential hopeful Chris Christie.

CBS, 11:35 p.m. ET

Tonight, on Late Show, it’s a reunion of two former Daily Show correspondents, each of whom have moved from that Comedy Central showcase to different networks and series. Stephen Colbert, the host of this program, plays host, for the night, to John Oliver, now the star of HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. Not too long ago, Oliver, as the summer Daily Show substitute for Jon Stewart, was the lead-in to Colbert’s The Colbert Report on Comedy Central. Now they’re sharing screen time again, but this time it’s not split-screen time…
