BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

ABC, 8:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Karen Gillan, a former Doctor Who companion who was utterly charming on that series, takes center stage here as a modern Eliza Doolittle – only instead of being cockney and poor, she’s cocky and a boor. She’s also flashily overdressed, like a fashionista with access to a bottomless closet of free samples, and is obsessed with conducting and reliving her entire life on new media. John Cho co-stars as the marketing executive who teaches her, like a younger and even stiffer Henry Higgins, how to improve herself – and opposed to her selfie image. The leads, and the very topical approach to the Pygmalion story, make it worth a taste, but it’s unclear how Gillan’s character, actually named Eliza Dooley (subtlety is not this show’s strong suit), can learn little life lessons each week, yet be so totally Clueless overall that the show’s basic premise still applies. For other opinions on this new series, and others, check out our TVWW Fall Preview 2014.

TBS, 8:00 p.m. ET

This is the American League Wild Card game – winner moves on, loser goes home for the winter. The Kansas City Royals squad has less playoff experience than the Oakland Athletics, and that may make the difference here. The Royals, however, have home-field advantage for this last-stand effort, and that may help as well. But for baseball fans everywhere, the 2014 postseason starts here, with the first and only game of the night.

ABC, 9:00 p.m. ET

Last week’s Season 2 reboot got the series off to a strong start – and tonight, Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his few trustworthy associates continue to do battle with all sorts of enemies, internal as well as external. And in tonight’s episode, the trail of one particularly unstable and powerful villain leads them to a familiar face: Raina (recurring cast member Ruth Negga), who has some advice for the surviving S.H.I.E.L.D. members – advice they’re approaching very, very warily.

Fox, 9:00 p.m. ET

Here’s an episode loaded with daddy issues, and other kinds: Jess (Zooey Deschanel) gets another visit from her dad, played by Rob Reiner – but this time he’s brought along a much younger woman, to whom he intends to propose. Complicating things is the fact that the “new girl” in question attended high school the same time as Jess – and, way back when, even stole Jess’ boyfriend. Now she’s after Jess’ dad – and she’s played, in what's announced as a recurring role, by Kaitlin Olson, who plays Dee on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

FX, 10:00 p.m. ET

There really wasn’t any doubt, but last week’s show made it official: In this final season, Jax (Charlie Hunnam) has gone over to the dark side in a way that makes Walter White look like a model citizen. And he’s taking dead aim again tonight, upping his body count at an alarming rate – especially since he seems to be killing people for all the wrong reasons. And once he learns that, who’s left to kill, but his own mother?
