BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Netflix, 3:00 a.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Naomi Watts, who’s also seen currently on Showtime’s Twin Peaks: The Return, stars in Netflix’s latest series, playing a therapist who gets very invested in the lives of her patients – too involved. As Season 1, which drops today on Netflix, opens, for example, her Jean Holloway becomes so fascinated by a patient’s description of his former lover, a woman with such sexual magnetism and freewheeling energy that he can’t forget her, that Jean begins visiting the woman at the coffeehouse where she works. Jean adopts a different name and, as she begins interacting with this other woman, a different persona. Gypsy wants to be HBO’s In Treatment – or, at least, a more dramatic version of the Natalie Wood comedy Penelope, where she played a woman so fascinating her therapist became obsessed with her. But for a show built around obsession, and built around Watts, Gypsy is disappointingly bland and uninvolving. Its plot and star may hold you for an episode or two, but beyond that, you might want to start seeing another therapist. It’s not you. It’s her.

Syfy, 8:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: For Season 3 of this “bounty hunters in space” Syfy series, Killjoys is doubling down on the mystery it introduced at the end of last season: That Dutch, the bounty hunter played by Hannah John-Kamen, became aware of an evil lookalike, an alien ruler named Aneela (pictured). She, or they, join a long list of TV doubles, doppelgangers, and clones, which I happen to discuss in my latest column for TV Guide Magazine. That’s not me being cross-promotional. It’s my evil twin.

PBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

Tonight’s tense and messy baking competition revolves around a trio of tricky tasks, including an impromptu demand to make, after just one practice try, a dozen well-formed lace pancakes, in the shape of hearts. Batter up! Check local listings.

TCM, 10:00 p.m. ET

Diane Lane, as an actress, has enchanted me for decades – and that enchantment begin with this 1979 movie, which was her cinematic debut. It was a starring role, too, in which she, as a young teenager, played a young teenager – an American girl who attends school in Paris, meets a young French boy (Thelonious Bernard, in what was his screen debut as well), and falls in love, with encouragement from an elderly French grifter, played by Laurence Olivier. A Little Romance is directed, with beautiful attention to the scenery and romance of Paris, by George Roy Hill, who fit this charming little movie into his resume after Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Slap Shot and just before The World According to Garp.
