BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Fox, 7:00 p.m. ET

Tonight at 7 ET, The USA women’s team faces Germany in the World Cup semifinal. It’s a tough draw, because Germany was heavily favored before the tournament began, and has done nothing to change that perception. The Germans have scored a total of 20 goals in this tournament’s games, and allowed only 3. The USA, by contrast, have survived and thrived not on offense, but on defense, with no goal allowed for the last 423 minutes – more than seven hours of play – and only one goal overall, in the opener against Australia. But for this game, the USA will have to be even more aggressive on offense than it finally became with a revised personnel lineup and battle plan against China. And while the defensive back wall has been imposingly strong, goalie Hope Solo (pictured) hasn’t been tested much since the Australian game, and she, too, probably must have an aggressively great game for the USA to make the finals again.

PBS, 10:00 p.m. ET

Caitlyn Jenner’s ultra-visible media “coming-out” transition, on a prime-time ABC special with Diane Sawyer and on the cover of Vanity Fair, was accomplished in her mid-60s, after a lifetime of conflict and reevaluation. Tonight’s Frontline looks at the issue from the other end of the age scale: Growing Up Trans talks to teens, and even pre-teens, as well as their parents, to explore, and explain, what it’s like when a child born as one gender identifies with the other. Check local listings.

Comedy Central, 10:00 p.m. ET

Tonight’s new episode has three sketches – including one, in which Amy Schumer goes out on a date and experiences time travel, that’s one of the most clever comic uses of the time-travel gimmick since Back to the Future. And this time, it’s future Amy trying to alter the course of events –and visiting present Amy to do so…

MTV, 10:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Not a recommendation. This MTV attempt to reboot the Scream movie franchise into a weekly TV series has a prime-time precedent. Remember Harper’s Island, the 2008 CBS series in which a serial killer murdered characters on an average of one per episode? No? Well, that’s sort of my point. And this new Scream, while being just as meta as its pop-culture-aware forebears, likely will turn out as the wrong idea, at the wrong time, on the wrong medium. But if you’re curious, it starts tonight, with a telephone call from a killer – but this time, it’s a cellphone…

Comedy Central, 11:00 p.m. ET

Tonight, two Jons who spell their first names without an H: Jon Stewart hosts Jon Hamm.

BBC America, 11:00 p.m. ET

Television’s all-time greatest naturalist, Sir David Attenborough (no, I haven’t forgotten about Jacques Cousteau – he’s a respectable second place), was invited by President Barack Obama to visit the White House and discuss nature. The result, televised for the BBC, just was broadcast overseas, and, over the weekend, here in the States. BBC America repeats it tonight. For a full story, and for Obama’s unexpected role as TV-Critic-In-Chief, see Bianculli’s Blog.
