BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

CBS, 8:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: CBS is going to the dogs — for new summer programming, that is. But it's hard to say if they're barking up the right tree with Dogs in the City, a new reality show featuring a "therapist" who treats man's best friend. It's not popular with contributor Ed Bark's feline companions — read his review HERE — and since the TVWW mascot is a cat (specifically my cat, Bane) a ringing endorsement from me would mean, at best, strategically-placed furball land mines on the carpet. Therefore, I'm keeping my opinion to myself.

NBC, 8:00 p.m. ET

It's time to drop the puck: The Los Angeles Kings take on the New Jersey Devils in the first game of the 2012 Stanley Cup finals.

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

Considered director Sam Peckinpah's first great film, Ride the High Country stars Joel McCrea as an ex-law man who's hired to transport a shipment of gold, unaware that his old friend, played by Randolph Scott, is planning to double-cross him. The western was Scott's final movie, and also marked the film debut of actress Mariette Hartley.

AMC, 8:00 p.m. ET

Russell Crowe and Renee Zellweger star as husband and wife in this Depression-era docudrama about 1930s boxer Jim Braddock. Director Ron Howard takes you way down with Braddock as his fortunes fade, which makes his quest for a second chance that much more emotional. Paul Giamatti plays Braddock's trainer.

FLIX, 8:00 p.m. ET

In 2003, Showtime produced this adaptation of Tennessee Williams' 1958  novel, The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone, with Helen Mirren playing the aging actress Karen Stone and Olivier Martinez her young Roman lover and Anne Bancroft and Brian Dennehy co-starring. Some may argue the 1961 adaptation with Vivien Leigh and Warren Beatty is the true classic, but don't look to me to cast a stone at this Mrs. Stone...

Great breakdown! Having well-written television like this makes evening downtime so much more engaging. When I'm taking a break between episodes or just relaxing after a long day of screen time, I usually unwind for a bit with a few casual rounds on [chicken road](https://chickenroad.gr.com/) before starting the next season. Really appreciate the thoughtful recommendations on this site!
