BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Showtime, 8:00 p.m. ET

Alex Strachan, in his TV That Matters blog for TVWW, just wrote a great piece explaining why Showtime’s The Circus has become such indispensible, instructional weekly viewing. And in the last week of President Trump’s First 100 Days, a week that includes the White House Correspondents’ Dinner where the President himself was a defiant no-show, this week’s political recap on The Circus is an especially Must-See edition.

Starz!, 9:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: There are some wonderful, enticing talents involved with this new series, which is about ancient and modern gods doing battle in modern society for the souls and attentions and devotions of mankind. Chief among them is Neil Gaiman, who wrote the novel on which this new series is so faithfully based. Another is Bryan Fuller, a visually stylish TV producer whose resume includes both Hannibal and Pushing Daisies. And among the cast are two of my favorite TV actors, both playing gods: Ian McShane from Deadwood and Gillian Anderson from The X-Files. Other stars include Ricky Whittle, Pablo Schreiber, Cloris Leachman, Kristin Chenoweth, Orlando Jones – and as TV narratives go, it’s unusual enough to maintain interest, with some very committed performances. But it’s also weird, visually as well as thematically and plotwise, and has the high put-off factor, for me, of glorifying in slow-motion videogame-style violence, as with another Starz series, Spartacus. But for every image or set piece that disappoints me, there’s another that dazzles me a little – as when Anderson, as the modern god named Media, makes her initial entrance on a TV set, looking unsettlingly like Lucille Ball’s Lucy Ricardo character from I Love Lucy.

ABC, 10:00 p.m. ET

SEASON FINALE: That went quickly. But it’s already the end for Season 3 of American Crime, which has managed to present two solid seasons of separate stories, offering different roles to several members of the cast each season – and, this evening, concludes a third, featuring, among others, strong and solemn work by Felicity Huffman. For David Hinckley's take, see his blog, All Along the Watchtower

CNN, 10:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: Last night, W. Kamau Bell was on CNN, not only commenting on the White House Correspondents’ Dinner as it was barely underway, but also promoting the return of his weekly CNN comedy series, which returns tonight. Add it to your Sunday political wrap-ups, along with Showtime’s The Circus and, though it’s on hiatus this week, HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.

Showtime, 10:00 p.m. ET

Mary-Louise Parker (pictured) has shown up as a recurring guest star on this show recently, playing a very blunt, self-assured and assuredly sexy political operative who is vetting Paul Giamatti’s assistant district attorney for a possible gubernatorial run. Parallel to this process, Giamatti’s estranged wife, played by Maggie Siff, has just invited him back into her life, and her bedroom – and she’s another power player on every level, a very modern spousal variant on Rumpole’s She Who Must Be Obeyed. Together, Parker and Siff provide two very charismatic and cunning variations on a similar theme – and there’s no way, given their characters’ power and proclivities, that Giamatti’s wannabe politician can hope to come out on top.

HBO, 10:31 p.m. ET

This may be the sharpest-written comedy on TV right now, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Selina may be the sharpest-tongued comic character. But no matter how funny she is, and how funny this show is, some of the political antics and observations on this show are so extreme, and so absurd, yet so recognizable, it almost hurts to laugh.
