Tonight’s edition offers a very Grinch-like look at the holidays – a reminder that this is the time of year not only for shopping and family gatherings and good cheer, but for waves of aggressive cybercrime. Last year, more than 40 million Target customers were targeted by cyberthieves and their credit card information hacked. In this report, we learn that the thieves are still out there – and virtally unstoppable. Ho ho ho.

THE BLACK STALLION

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

It’s a full day of animal movies on TCM, a lineup that includes 1946’s The Yearling (4 p.m. ET) and 1943’s Lassie Come Home (6:15 p.m. ET). But in prime time, TCM offers two of the best horse movies ever made: 1944’s National Velvet, starring Elizabeth Taylor (at 10:15 p.m. ET), and, at 8 p.m. ET, 1979’s The Black Stallion, a stunningly photographed movie about a boy and a horse.

DOWNTON ABBEY REDISCOVERED

PBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

Season 5 of Downton Abbey premieres on Jan. 4, 2015. Meanwhile, to set the stage, PBS presents this somewhat self-congratulatory Downton recap, and a celebration of its status as a genuine global phenomenon.

THE WALKING DEAD

AMC, 9:00 p.m. ET

MIDSEASON FINALE: I haven’t seen this in advance, but the advance word is that tonight’s episode, which climaxes with the effort to rescue Beth and Carol from Grady Memorial Hospital, is dark, dark, dark. And Norman Reedus, who plays Daryl, is right in the middle of it all, as usual.

THE MENTALIST

CBS, 9:30 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: Held back until this late in the season, The Mentalist returns with a new vibe: Lisbon and Jane are now a couple. But how they react to that, how their colleagues react, and how they tackle cases differently, that’s something we’ll just have to wait and see. I’d make a prediction – but I’m no mentalist.
