In 1933, special effects pioneer Willis O’Brien mixed live-action footage and stop-motion monsters to create the king of the apes. King Kong’s proportions may have kept changing throughout the film, but there’s no denying how exciting it must have been, and somehow still is, to see Kong take his iconic place atop the Empire State Building. And Fay Wray is almost as much fun to watch, though for different reasons.

2018 STATE OF THE UNIOM ADDRESS

Sorry, that’s State of the Union. My mistake. Actually, the House of Representatives’ mistake, but still: As 1968 presidential write-in candidate Pat Paulsen would say, “Picky, picky, picky.” But tonight, it’s not President Paulsen addressing the joint bodies of Congress. It’s President Donald Trump, making his first State of the Union speech since occupying the Oval Office. Many broadcast, cable and news networks will be covering this live, including CBS, ABC, NBC, Fix, PBS, Telemundo, C-SPAN, and Fox News Channel, CNN and MSNBC.

INSIDE THE NFL

Usually, the hosts and guess on this show talk about many games. Tonight, in this preview to Super Bowl LII, they’ll be discussing only one.

THE PRODUCERS

Mel Brooks’ 1967 comic masterpiece is going to be showcased, along with Brooks himself, this April at the annual TCM Classic Film Festival. Meanwhile, or in case you’re not traveling to Hollywood for the occasion, TCM tonight presents The Producers in prime time, with all of its lunacy, irreverence and utter brilliance intact. If you can’t sing along with every verse of “Springtime for Hitler,” it’s a skill that’s never too late to be acquired…

THE LATE SHOW WITH STEPHEN COLBERT

CBS, 11:35 p.m. ET

Many broadcast and cable outlets will be reacting to President Trump’s first State of the Union address afterward with live commentary and analysis. But only Stephen Colbert is doing his broadcast network late show live tonight, to react accordingly…
