AFI LIFE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: A TRIBUTE TO GEORGE CLOONEY

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

The AFI really is on a roll with its AFI specials of late. Last year’s tribute, to Diane Keaton, was spectacularly warm and amusing, and this year’s tribute (shown earlier this summer on TNT), to George Clooney, is another instant classic. Gathering to honor and/or poke fun at Clooney are such luminaries as Jimmy Kimmel, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Julianna Margulies, Bill Murray, Richard Kind, Don Cheadle, and Clooney’s wife, Amal, and father, Nick. And the tribute is followed, at 9:30 p.m. ET, by a TCM telecast of one of Clooney’s very best films, the Coen Brothers’ 2000 masterpiece, O Brother, Where Art Thou?

Tonight’s episode is called “Quite a Ride” – and already this season on Better Call Saul, it has been. I’m now seeing these new episodes just as you are, as they’re televised by AMC. And even on a holiday night, I’ll be sure to be there.

This 2018 documentary by Julie Cohen and Betsy West, along with Morgan Neville’s documentary this year about Fred Rogers called Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, has enjoyed enthusiastic and almost universal acclaim.
