BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

ABC, 8:00 p.m. ET

SERIES FINALE: It’s Zero Hour for Zero Hour. The final two episodes of this ABC series are televised tonight, theoretically explaining some of this show’s most baffling mysteries. Here’s one of mine: Why, apart from simple curiosity and a super-dull Saturday TV night, should anyone care?

Flix, 8:00 p.m. ET

Kevin Smith wrote and directed this 1997 movie, which managed to incorporate his love of comics and geekdom while still delivering a somewhat standard romantic comedy. Ben Affleck stars, before he was one, as a comic book writer who falls in love – with a lesbian, played by Joey Lauren Adams. Check out the casting here, because it’s impressive. Both Affleck and Matt Damon are here, before breaking out as the writers and stars of Good Will Hunting. Both Jason Lee and Ethan Suplee are here, before reteaming by playing brothers on the NBC sitcom My Name Is Earl. And both Jason Mewes and Smith are here, respectively playing the characters they would play in several other of Smith’s movies: Jay and Silent Bob.

Fox Movie Channel, 8:00 p.m. ET

Ron Howard directed this 2006 movie with the deck stacked against him: So many people were so aware, and enamored of, Dan Brown’s bestseller that even the book’s biggest fans would come to the movie expecting either too much or too little. But the screenplay gets points for being faithful to the book, and Tom Hanks is a credible “symbologist” hero, and there are, indeed, some good set pieces and some fabulous scenery. On a slow TV night, which this is, I’ll take it. Audrey Tautou co-stars.

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

An absolute epic, shown in the proper jaw-dropping elongated-rectangular ratio. David Lean won an Oscar for this 1962 film masterpiece, which stars Peter O’Toole as T.E. Lawrence, an outsider who gained the trust of the Arabs and led them in their WWI revolt against the Turks. My, how the political world has changed. Movies, too. Omar Sharif, Alec Guinness co-star.

NBC, 10:00 p.m. ET

No, it’s not over yet. This NBC series was pulled from the schedule so quickly that there are still more fresh episodes to burn off during the summer. Here’s another one – and next week, still another. But hey – it’s better than what NBC is offering an hour earlier, which is Wrestlemania. So much for Do No Harm.
