2016 ACADEMY OF COUNTRY MUSIC AWARDS

CBS, 8:00 p.m. ET

Dierks Bentley and Luke Bryan co-host the awards again this year, which is the 51^st performance-filled gala, broadcast live from Las Vegas. At least two judges from TV’s musical- competition shows will be among the country artists performing tonight: Keith Urban from Fox’s American Idol, and Blake Shelton (pictured) from NBC’s The Voice.

THE WALKING DEAD

AMC, 9:00 p.m. ET

SEASON FINALE: Last week’s episode with a blood-spattered camera lens and the cliffhanger fear that Daryl (Norman Reedus) had just been shot dead by Dwight. Well, I haven’t seen tonight’s season finale, but there’s no way Daryl is dead. Shot, yes. And someone is quite likely to die tonight, yes. But not Daryl. Never Daryl. And this should be the expanded episode introducing Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Negan, a long-awaited adversary from the original Walking Dead graphic novels.

SHAMELESS

Showtime, 9:00 p.m. ET

SEASON FINALE: Last week’s episode had so many emotional confrontations, several cast members could submit the episode as their personal reel for Emmy consideration. And tonight, in the season finale, we have a shot at Fiona’s wedding, and also the probability that her father Frank, having just paid for a hit on Fiona’s intended, may bring a potential killer into the wedding party.

GIRLS

HBO, 10:00 p.m. ET

The gang goes to see Adam’s play – but not necessarily together, and with enough baggage and mutual misunderstandings that the biggest drama is not likely to be on the stage.

BILLIONS

Showtime, 10:00 p.m. ET

Last week, Axe emerged triumphantly, despite all the enemies and subplots circling around him. Tonight, he’s not likely to be so lucky. The sharks still are circling, but tonight, there’s blood in the water.

David Bianculli has been a TV critic since 1975, including a 14-year stint at the New York Daily News, and sees no reason to stop now. Currently, he's TV critic for NPR's Fresh Air with Terry Gross, and is an occasional substitute host for that show. He's also an author and teaches TV and film history at New Jersey's Rowan University. His 2009 Dangerously Funny: The Uncensored Story of 'The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour', has been purchased for film rights. His latest, The Platinum Age of Television: From I Love Lucy to the Walking Dead, How TV Became Terrific, is an effusive guidebook that plots the path from the 1950s’ Golden Age to today’s era of quality TV.
