BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Animal Planet, 3:00 p.m. ET

For the 15th straight year, Animal Planet presents its canine counterpart to the Super Bowl, with impossibly cute little pups cavorting on a small-scale football field. Or maybe, in this case, it’s a pawball field. At any rate, these playful puppies will be divided into teams, and wil compete to win the “Lombarky” trophy. Which is not, despite popular rumor, named in honor of TVWW’s own beloved Uncle Barky.

CBS, 6:30 p.m. ET

It’s the New England Patriots, led by all-time great quarterback Tom Brady (and as a lifelong Miami Dolphins fan, how it pains me to acknowledge that, much less type and post it), back in the Super Bowl for the third consecutive year. The Los Angeles Rams, on the other hand (and on the other side of the line of scrimmage), are playing in the Superl Bowl for only the fourth time in its history. Today, though, it’s not just a story of experience. It may or may not be a battle for the ages, but Super Bowl LIII, undeniably, is a battle of the ages. Brady is 41 years old, while his QB counterpart on the Rams team, Jared Goff, is a mere 24. And Patriots coach Bill Belichick, whose game plans and halftime adjustments are a huge part of the Patriots’ dominant decades of success, is 66 – making him precisely twice as old as the coach on the opposite sideline, the Ram’s 33-year-old Sean McVay. Both teams had to prevail in overtime in their respective league championship games to reach this point – but today, only one team will walk away today with the Vince Lombardi trophy. As both teams play, though, CBS will present four quarters – and maybe more, if this game, too, goes into overtime – of the most expensive and lucrative TV commercials of the year.

PBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

In tonight’s new episode, “Foreign Bodies,” Albert goes to Cambridge, while Victoria remains in London, overseeing the city’s sudden and severe cholera epidemic – which affects some of this show’s familiar supporting characters. Check local listings.

HBO, 9:00 p.m. ET

New evidence comes to light in tonight’s new episode – and old evidence goes missing. Both events have an impact on the case at hand, and in more than one timeline.

HBO, 10:00 p.m. ET

Madeline Wise continues her supporting role this season as Pete Holmes’ new girlfriend – and in tonight’s episode, she gets even more involved in his personal life. And in his professional career path…
