BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Netflix, 3:00 a.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: It seems weird to say this, without any irony, but Santa Clarita Diet, which is unveiled today with its entire 10-episode first season available on Netflix, establishes itself instantly as one of the three best zombie shows on television right now. Or, to be even more specific, one of the two best zombie comedies. The zombie drama that’s part of the big three best undead series, is, of course, The Walking Dead. The other entertaining show, a zombie comedy-drama, is CW’s iZombie, which returns with new episodes next month. This new entry in TV’s zombie jamboree, Netflix’s Santa Clarita Diet, stars Drew Barrymore as a woman who slowly realizes she’s become a zombie, with an appetite for human flesh and an increasingly unchecked id – and libido. Timothy Olyphant plays her husband, who tries to adjust to his wife’s new reality. The 10 episodes of Diet play to this new reality with a roller-coaster ride of visual and verbal surprises, from almost laughably gross moments (as when Barrymore’s character loses her lunch, or an eyeball) to cleverly twisted plot twists. Santa Clarita Diet is like Tales from the Crypt as a miniseries – and that’s meant as a compliment. Oh and both of the leads are very, dryly funny. TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

This 1963 Alfred Hitchcock thriller is one of his true classics. Watch the movie, then read, or watch, Hitchcock/Truffaut, for a wonderful dissection of the film’s key set pieces. The book Hitchcock/Truffaut, in which Hitchcock was interviewed in depth about each of his movies by fellow filmmaker and former film critic Francois Truffaut, came out in 1966, and made me want to become a critic. The movie version of Hitchcock/Truffaut came out in 2015, and is so good, I can’t get it out of my TiVo stash.

CW, 9:00 p.m. ET

SEASON FINALE: It’s the Season 2 finale of this wonderfully weird series, which already has been renewed for a Season 3, and has Rebecca (Rachel Bloom) in a wedding dress. So expect drama and trauma, no matter what happens.

PBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

SPECIAL: This Live from Lincoln Center celebration combines newly commissioned and invited performances with vintage highlights from this programs archive, as musicians gather to remember and celebrate the golden anniversary of the Mostly Mozart music festival, emanating, as usual, from the Lincoln Center of the Performing Arts. Check local listings.

Showtime, 9:00 p.m. ET

The PBS series Frontline already has done three programs this season on the rise of Donald Trump to President of the United States. Tonight, a Showtime documentary recap, from the team behind The Circus, presents a sort of stand-alone sequel, covering the election night and week itself, while looking back to memorable moments from past TV appearances and headlines featuring Trump and Hillary Clinton.

HBO, 10:00 p.m. ET

This week’s scheduled guests include Michael Eric Dyson and roundtable panelists Jason Kander, Tomi Lahren, and Rick Wilson.
