NFC WILD CARD PLAYOFF: ARIZONA CARDINALS VS. CAROLINA PANTHERS

Postseason in the NFL, and the road to Super Bowl XLIX, begins today with two back-to-back do-or-die games. First up is an NFC contest of two teams that hardly come to the postseason with bragging rights. The Arizona Cardinals lost four of their final six games and limped into the playoffs, while the Carolina Panthers, surging with four victories to end the regular season, comes to the postseason with a losing record: 7-8-1. Yet that was enough, in the NFC South, to take the division, and keep going for at least one more game. This is that game.

Marilyn Monroe was on a quest to get more respect for her acting ability when she agreed to star in this 1956 film version of the William Inge play – and she got it, with a raw, riveting performance in which she plays a sort of American Sally Bowles from Cabaret.

AFC WILD CARD PLAYOFF: BALTIMORE RAVENS VS. PITTSBURGH STEELERS

NBC, 8:00 p.m. ET

This AFC wild card game pits the Pittsburgh Steelers, who won the AFC North, against the Baltimore Ravens, who squeaked in by securing the last available wild-card slot. Now it’s all or nothing – and in the regular season, each team claimed a victory against the other, so expect a tough fight.

BBC America, 10:00 p.m. ET

Tonight’s guests: Eddie Redmayne, who stars as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything; Liam Neeson; Anna Kendrick; Olympic gold medal cyclist Sir Bradley Wiggins; and musical guest Conchita.
