BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

CBS, 8:00 p.m. ET

In this episode, Howard (Simon Helberg) gets an exciting invitation from left field – or, rather, from the infield. He’s invited, as an astronaut, to throw out the first pitch at a ball game. Which, for Howard, will take more than a little practice to pull off without embarrassment.

Fox, 8:00 p.m. ET

Last week’s premiere episode of Gotham spent much of its time with Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor), the twisted little man who, in time, will reinvent himself as the villainous Penguin. This week, the focus is on young street stray Selina Kyle, who, in time, will become Catwoman – and who, in this young pre-costumed incarnation, is played by Camren Bicondova.

Fox, 9:00 p.m. ET

What century is this, anyway? On Sleepy Hollow, not only do we have Ichabod Crane, demon hunter – bringing to life, in a more heroic and driven way, the character from Washington Irving’s classic short story – but this season, we have him teamed with none other than Benjamin Franklin, played by Timothy Busfield from thirtysomething.

HBO, 9:00 p.m. ET

Finally! A workplace that looks like mine! This documentary, co-directed by Martin Scorsese and David Tedeschi, is an unapologetic love letter to The New York Review of Books on the provocative book review and essays publication’s golden anniversary. Robert Silvers, 84, is both the central subject and behind-the-scenes instigator of this new film, which is an inspirational salute to the power of ideas – especially ones that go against the norm or the grain. And in these days of paperless, faceless blog sites, it’s a joy to see the cluttered desks, rough print pages and everything else that makes the cramped, cluttered Review headquarters look like an office from a previous era.

NBC, 10:00 p.m. ET

Last week’s Season 2 premiere showed Red (James Spader) on the loose – but a newly introduced character, his ex-wife Naomi Hyland, captured by an especially ruthless bad guy. She hadn’t seen her ex in 20 years, but that didn’t stop the villains from grabbing her as leverage. And since she’s played by Mary-Louise Parker, we wish her well, because we want to see her trade lines with Spader. But for now, until Naomi is rescued, she’s sequestered far away from the Red zone.
