BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Hulu, 3:00 a.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: The entire Season 1 of this new drama series, a co-production of Hulu and the BBC, is unveiled today on Hulu. Watch in a binge chunk, and you’ll travel briskly through a few years in the lives of its two young main characters. Daisy Edgar-Jones plays Marianne – a well-to-do Irish lass who usually is the smartest person in the room, and usually lets the others know it. Paul Mescal plays Connell, a working-class bloke who is almost as smart, and much more reserved. We first see them as elder teens, as they flirt cautiously with each other, then begin to see each other, and sleep together, off and on. The off and on, in this series based on Sally Rooney’s Normal People smash novel, starts in high school, and follows them, eventually, to the end of college. The acting by Edgar-Jones and Mescal is vulnerable and not at all self-conscious, and their characters’ emotional push and pull, towards and away from each other, reveals insecurities and concerns that lead to other people, other problems, and, at times, back into each other’s paths and arms. It’s a quiet drama series, and a good one. For a full review, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower.

Hulu, 3:00 a.m. ET

Tonight’s new episode (with this series, Hulu is dropping new installments weekly, rather than all at once) is called “Phyllis & Fred & Brenda & Marc.” Presumably, that’s a sly nod to the late ’60s movie Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, a comedy-drama about would-be suburban swingers. Except in this hour of Mrs. America, these couples aren’t strange bedfellows at all: They’re combatants in an on-air TV debate – on Tom Snyder’s Tomorrow show. On one side, Phyllis Schlafly (Cate Blachett) and her husband Fred (Roger Slattery), attacking the Equal Rights Amendment; on the other side, liberal attorneys Brenda Feigen-Fasteau (Ari Graynor, pictured) and her husband Marc (Adam Brody). Last week, in a similar battle for media attention, Phyllis emerged as the victor. This week, things may be different.

FX, 10:00 p.m. ET

In tonight’s new episode, the vampires fear they’ve been victimized by an electronics curse (join the club), while the brood also decides to plan and carry out its first real target mission against others in their neighborhood.

IFC, 10:00 p.m. ET

There’s only one more episode, after tonight, for Hank Azaria’s clever comedy series, which in its last lap is taking place in a dystopian future, with Jules and Jim reuniting – but not in a romantic Jules et Jim French-movie way. Not even close. On Brockmire, Jules is barging in on Jim while he’s at a urinal – and Jules has a gun.
