BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

NBC, 8:00 p.m. ET

I’m really enjoying this year’s cycle of The Voice, which already, at this point, seems to be the best one yet. Lots of talented contestants, lots of enjoyable banter among the judges (of late, Adam Levine seems to be coloring his hair in exotic pastel shades merely to elicit insults from Blake Shelton), and lots of interesting guest mentors. Last night The Voice brought aboard Miley Cyrus, whose advice to the contestants was both specific and helpful – and she’s back tonight.

Starz!, 8:05 p.m. ET

I don’t even try to fight it any more. Whenever this 1969 Western movie is listed, I’ll highlight it – because it’s one of my all-time favorite films, and there’s always a chance someone will be sampling it for the first time. Go for it – please. And no matter how many times you’ve seen it, it’ll please you again. I know. Every time I write about it, I also end up watching it, even though I could recite large chunks verbatim. (“Who are those guys?”) Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Katharine Ross star; George Roy Hill directed, and William Goldman wrote the screenplay.

CW, 9:00 p.m. ET

Every time morgue assistant and functioning zombie Liv (Rose McIver) consumes the brain of a murder victim, she temporarily absorbs both the memories and the personalities of that person. Tonight, she ingests the brains of a murdered stripper, to which I say, What took you so long?

CBS, 10:00 p.m. ET

SPECIAL: Please watch, and record, this. We’ve showcased some of James Corden’s “Carpool Karaoke” segments here on TVWW as Video Worth Watching – particularly his effervescent car ride and musical duet with Adele, whose reaction to the bit, and to Corden, is a total delight to watch. The first time he harmonizes with her, she shoots him a glance as if to say, “Whoa!” – and the singing, if not the car, shifts into high gear. Watch that segment, repeats of some others, and a brand new one with Jennifer Lopez. They’re all part of this prime-time special, built around the clever concept that has allowed Corden to conquer the Internet and plant his flag firmly among the current wave of late-night hosts.

FX, 10:00 p.m. ET

Episode 9. This is the penultimate episode of this series, and the one in which the invective-filled tapes of Det. Mark Fuhrman, who had denied ever using the “N-word,” are uncovered, and played in court.
