BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

CBS, 2:00 p.m. ET

Yesterday, in the first half of the Elite 8, both No.1 teams in their respective brackets advanced to the Final Four: Wisconsin from the West and the tournament’s overall favorite, Kentucky, from the Midwest. But Kentucky almost lost to Notre Dame Saturday night, winning on a pair of clutch free throws in the final seconds of a thrilling game – and even after that, Notre Dame had a shot at the win with a three-pointer that missed the mark. What a game. Meanwhile, today’s first game will not feature a No. 1 seed as the winner, because in the East, the three top seeds already have been eliminated. That leaves No. 4 Louisville, the highest-ranked East team still standing, facing No. 7 Michigan State, which toppled No. 3 Oklahoma on Friday. That game starts around 2:20 p.m. ET on CBS, followed at about 5 p.m. ET, on the same network, by the South’s No. 1 seed, Duke, facing No. 2 seed Gonzaga.

PBS, 8:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: This underrated PBS import begins Season 4 – and even if you’re unfamiliar with the show’s characters and premise, you can get up to speed quickly as these nurse midwives in downtrodden East London try to help expectant mothers in the decades after WWII. Check local listings.

HBO, 8:00 p.m. ET

This documentary, written and directed by Alex Gibney, may not be the boldest and bravest TV offering ever to probe, recount and question the basic tenets of Scientology (that distinction, believe it or not, still goes to an episode of South Park), but it’s close. In this potent two-hour study, Gibney’s strongest and most memorable segments involve one of two factors: new interviews with former Scientologists, including Oscar-winning screenwriter Paul Haggis, and vintage interviews, unearthed by Gibney, with Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard himself. Tom Cruise is shown in vintage interviews and footage, but does not participate in this new documentary, which is thought-provoking and, at times, disturbing. For a full review, see Ed Bark’s Uncle Barky’s Bytes.

CBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

Last week’s episode fooled me, I freely admit. As the hour unfolded, I expected the election to go one way – and then (surprise!) it went another. So now what? Well, now there’s a little room for political realignment. And political payback.

AMC, 9:00 p.m. ET

SEASON FINALE: Any episode of The Walking Dead is fraught with drama and danger – but an extended season finale episode? And one which begins with our hero Rick being subdued and knocked unconscious by another of our heroes, Michonne? And with the whole question of whether the residents of the walled-in city are friends or foes up in the air? How can you not watch?

Bianculli’s curation effectively balances nostalgia with timely cultural markers, especially highlighting the ironic origins of Aquaman alongside the poignant Morrison tribute. https://victoryfoodscn.com
