BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

CNN, 9:00 p.m. ET

I’m really looking forward to this episode, because the 1970s were a hugely important period for the cinema. Some of the best and boldest movies of modern times came from that decade, from Dog Day Afternoon, Klute and All the President’s Men to A Clockwork Orange, The Parallax View and Deliverance. But that type of filmmaking was set aside, for the most part, by the arrival of the blockbuster movie, a box-office-shattering phenomenon that included Star Wars and was inaugurated by Steven Spielberg’s brilliant, still-thrilling seafaring drama, Jaws. Every summer since it came out, I’ve watched Jaws at least once. And I’m due again…

Epix, 9:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, who teamed for Fox’s Batman prequel series Gotham, have come up with something even more backward-looking – a pre-prequel. Whereas Batman focused on the costumed crimefighter, and Gotham showed a younger Bruce Wayne as he developed into a secret avenger with help from his loyal family butler Alfred, Pennyworth goes back to London in the swinging Sixties to follow the butler himself – a younger, even scrappier Alfred Pennyworth, played by Jack Bannon. As always with the Batman franchise, though, the villains steal the show – and in this case, the chief villain is Bet Sykes, introduced as a matronly, sadistic cockney woman played by British singer Paloma Faith. Faith is so into her role here that she makes Pennyworth a comic-book series to add to your viewing list, just when you thought you didn’t need, and couldn’t stand, one more. For a full review, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower.

Showtime, 9:00 p.m. ET

It would seem to be good news for the odd-couple investigators, because Jackie (Kevin Bacon) and DeCourcy (Aldis Hodge) have gotten an arms dealer in custody, and suspect him of supplying automatic weapons and other guns to the armored-car robbers. But while the remaining crooks plan yet another heist, Jackie and DeCourcy argure about whether to charge the dealer and reduce the number of illegal guns on the street, or keep him in play to pursue the robbers.

CBS, 10:00 p.m. ET

In this penultimate episode from Season 1 of The Good Fight, this CBS All Açcess series reached back into the cast list of CBS’s The Good Wife, this show’s parent program, to bring back a fan favorite: smarmy murderer Colin Sweeney, played by creepily, yet with such devilish charm, by Dylan Baker. This time, he is represented by Christine Baranski as Diane – as her own client.

Showtime, 10:00 p.m. ET

Tonight’s episode takes place in the year 2012, and hones in on the relationship between Fox News Channel chief Roger Ailes (Russell Crowe) and one of his star anchors, Gretchen Carlson (played by Naomi Watts).

HBO, 11:01 p.m. ET

He’s back. So I’ll be watching.
