BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

HBO, 8:00 p.m. ET

DOCUMENTARY PREMIERE: It’s easy to imagine that, should President Trump switch his TV from Fox News tonight to watch this new, Memorial Day HBO profile of Arizona Senator John McCain, Trump would be fuming by the end of it. Not because of the way it recounts and summarizes McCain’s life and political career, or what McCain says in new interviews conducted for this profile – or even because such former McCain political rivals as Barack Obama and Bill Clinton are on hand to comment on McCain’s style and legacy. No, the reason I suspect President Trump might be outraged is that, in this entire documentary, he’s never even mentioned. To some, that might serve as the strongest TV viewing recommendation of all… For full reviews, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower and Ed Bark's Uncle Barky's Bytes

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

TCM’s all-weekend Memorial Day tribute continues, with today’s presentation of such classic war movies as 1946’s The Best Years of Our Lives (at 5 p.m. ET) and 1957’s The Bridge on the River Kwai (11 p.m. ET). But pay particular attention to the evening’s prime-time showcase film, 1963’s The Great Escape. What a story (based on actual events), and what a cast: James Garner, Steve McQueen, James Coburn, Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson, David McCallum, and many manly more…

AMC, 9:00 p.m. ET

Tonight AMC concludes James Cameron’s personal look at science fiction by presenting, back to back, the final two installments, covering the topics of “Intelligent Machines” and “Time Travel.” For maximum irony, give a vocal command to Alexa to record these episodes on your DVR, then watch them later, at your convenience, by time-shifting.

TNT, 9:00 p.m. ET

Last night, the Cleveland Cavaliers persevered in Game 7 of its East conference series against the Boston Celtics, and will play in Thursday’s NBC Finals. Tonight, in the seventh and deciding game in the West conference, the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets battle for the same privilege.
