BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Disney Channel, 7:30 p.m. ET

If Lewis Carroll's 1865 Alice in Wonderland isn't strange enough on its own, in director Tim Burton's hands, it's downright bizarre. And beautiful. The 2010 film modernizes the story and combines live-action and state-of-the-art computer animation for a trippy version down the rabbit hole. It was a smashing financial success, and rightfully won the Oscar for Best Art Direction. Mia Wasikowska is a proper — then defiant — Alice, and Johnny Depp's performance is, of course, mad as a hatter.

Sundance, 7:15 p.m. ET

Sundance presents the 2007 film that enshrined the unlikely line "I … drink … your milkshake!!" into the national psyche. The brilliant-yet-harsh saga stars Daniel Day Lewis as a gold prospector in early 20th century Texas who finds oil — literally with his bare hands — and then proceeds to acquire deals, by any means necessary to build his empire. It's written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, who also helmed the landmark film, Magnolia, in 1999. Lewis won the Best Actor Oscar for his unrelenting performance.

History, 9:00 p.m. ET

Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton star as the patriarchs of the Hatfield and McCoy clans — whose famous feud started at the end of the Civil War and continued for generations —in History Channel's first original scripted miniseries. TVWW's Ed Bark's has high praise for Hatfields & McCoys, calling it the best made-for-TV western drama since 2006's Broken Trail. To read his full review, click HERE. The three-part miniseries runs tonight through Wednesday.

HBO, 8:00 p.m. ET

The story of Ernest Hemingway and his third wife, war correspondent Martha Gellhorn, is dramatized in HBO's Hemingway & Gellhorn. Clive Owen's Hemingway may be the name that draws viewers, but it's Nicole Kidman, who portrays Gellhorn, who steals the show. Read Ed Bark's review of the film HERE.

PBS, 10:00 p.m. ET

The Oscar-nominated Hell and Back Again makes its debut on PBS's Independent Lens. Embedded with the Marines in Afghanistan in 2009, photojournalist and filmmaker Danfung Dennis captures the frontline action experienced by Echo Company. He then follows one of the injured, Sergeant Nathan Harris, back home to North Carolina to chronicle his recovery. Dennis masterfully contrasts Harris' two worlds, demonstrating how returning home can be as traumatic as the war zone itself. Check local listings.
