BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Amazon Prime Video, 3:00 a.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: It’s Season 3 for Sharon and Ron, the very unlikely couple played by Sharon Horgan and Ron Delaney on this sharp-witted Amazon comedy series. When they started as a “couple,” they were a weekend hookup that went a different way after she became pregnant. Now, to begin the new season, they now have two kids, and these new episodes will include infidelity, addiction, unemployment, and more. And supporting player Carrie Fisher, who finished filming this season of Catastrophe weeks before her sudden death, appears for the last time as Rob’s mother.

Netflix, 3:00 a.m. ET

TELEMOVIE PREMIERE: Actor Roger Guenveur Smith has known Spike Lee a long time – the former appeared in the latter’s Do the Right Thing. But as an actor and writer, Smith also has teamed with Lee, on a Peabody-winning one-man telemovie about Huey P. Newton. With Rodney King, he and Lee reteam for another one-man show. It’s the filmed record of a stage performance, held at an outdoor theater in front of an audience, in which Smith tells the story of the 1991 police beating of Rodney King. He tells it from several perspectives – King, the police, angry rappers, omniscient narrator – but with such passion, conviction and immediacy that it draws you into the narrative, and its barely bottled outrage, completely and unforgettably. Of all the new offerings Netflix is dropping tonight, this is the one you have to watch.

Netflix, 3:00 a.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Justin Simien’s 2014 movie of the same name is the inspiration for this new Netflix spinoff, and claims him as an executive producer, and occasional writer and director, as well. The narration is provided by Giancarlo Esposito, who’s moonlighting from duties as the returning Gus Fring on AMC’s Better Call Saul. But here, he’s only heard, not seen, as each installment of Dear White People focuses mostly on a different core character. Central to the opening show, and the entire series, is Samantha, or Sam, played by Logan Browning. She’s a college student at Winchester University, hosting a campus radio show and living in an African-American dorm at a mostly white college, finding lessons and contradictions about race everywhere she looks. It’s a solid, entertaining show, even if some of its dialogue sounds a little too written and calculated.

Netflix, 3:00 a.m. ET

This is not a recommendation. Director Kitty Green presents this nonfiction film that’s technically a documentary, but also, arguably, an unabashed exploitation film. (What to call it? A docutation? An exploitmentary?) It takes the December 1996 murder case of young JonBenet Ramsey and revisits it from several directions, purportedly by planning and casting a film on the Ramsey case, with the parts filled by local residents of the same Boulder, CO community where the young girl lived and died. So without narration or context, we see the audition footage for the alleged drama’s several parts – the girl, the brother, the mother, the father, the police chief – as well as some of those wannabe actors running scenes and reading “sides.” It’s all creepy, and to me indefensible – especially when it gathers a small gaggle of little girls, dressed up in JonBenet pageant wear and makeup, and photographs and interviews them individually and as a group. It’s like Exploitation: The Next Generation. Please avoid it.

ABC, 9:00 p.m. ET

John Ridley directs this ABC documentary, keyed to the 25th anniversary of the uprising following the verdict in the Rodney King case, and examining the decade of racial acts and confrontations that led up to the Aug. 29, 1992 riots.

HBO, 10:00 p.m. ET

This week’s guest list includes Sen. Elizabeth Warren and longtime political activist (and actor and director) Rob Reiner, as well as nuclear physicist Ernest Moniz.
