AUSTIN POWERS: INTERNATIONAL MAN OF MYSTERY

Starz!, 7:25 p.m. ET

This 1997 Mike Myers movie managed to spoof both the James Bond spy films of the 1960s and the contemporaneous satires of those very movies – the James Coburn Flint films in particular. (The sound of the presidential phone in Austin Powers is lifted straight from those later spoofs.) But with its colorful and musical salute to the Sixties, with Myers playing multiple roles, and with Elizabeth Hurley as a fantastically game female foil, this movie that launched the Austin Powers franchise was, and remains, loads of flashy, frothy fun.

MIKE & MOLLY

CBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

Melissa McCarthy not only stars in this sitcom, but in this particular episode, in which Susan Sarandon returns in the guest role of Molly’s favorite author, McCarthy serves as director as well.

THE FOLLOWING

Fox, 9:00 p.m. ET

SEASON FINALE: This is the Season 2 finale for this show, but the root word “final” means very little to the writers of this stretched-out, implausible series. The Season 1 finale, after all, purported to show us the deaths of serial killer Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) and his ex-wife Claire (Natalie Zea), yet both of them popped up very much alive in Season 2. So watch this season finale if you like, but with the understanding that the characters on this show, Kevin Bacon’s Ryan Hardy included, have the same general resilience factor as Wile E. Coyote.

Syfy, 9:00 p.m. ET

The cancellation of this entertaining series may not seem fair, but tonight it seems faire: the series finds reason to visit a Renaissance Faire, which, to be Faire, is something I’ve personally never done.

THE BLACKLIST

NBC, 10:00 p.m. ET

Elizabeth (Megan Boone) has had a very tough time of it lately, dealing with the realization that her husband married her only to spy on her as part of an ongoing enemy mission. But tonight, it’s Red (James Spader) who steps into the spotlight, and the heat, as he’s targeted by a shady character even more powerful and Machiavellian than Red himself.
