BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Various Networks, 7:00 p.m. ET

Here’s the tipoff to tonight’s first tipoff: It happens around 7:15 p.m. ET on CBS, when Michigan (No. 2 seed in the Midwest bracket) faces No. 11 seed Tennessee. At 7:25 p.m. ET on TBS, Iowa State, ranked No. 3 in he East, faces No. 7 seed Connecticut, one of several lower-seeded teams still alive this far into the tournament. (In their last game, they beat No. 2 seed Villanova in overtime.) Back on CBS at 9:45 p.m. ET, Louisville, seeded No. 4 in the Midwest, faces Kentucky, ranked No. 8, and fresh off an upset win toppling top seed Wichita State. The night’s final game is played at 9:55 p.m. ET on TBS, when top-seeded East team Virginia faces Michigan State, ranked No. 4.

CW, 8:00 p.m. ET

There’s something so quietly charming about this improv show, I enjoy watching it every time I tune to it – and I’m both delighted and surprised to learn that younger viewers, the target for this show now that it’s on the CW, appear to feel the same. It seems to embrace creativity and fun in equal measure – and how in the world can that be anything but good?

HBO, 10:00 p.m. ET

Jimmy Carter has been making the rounds this week – he just made his first appearance on The Colbert Report, and was unexpectedly hilarious – and tonight he’s scheduled as the top-of-show guest for Bill Maher. Also on the show: W. Kamau Bell and Josh Gad.

TCM, 10:00 p.m. ET

If you’ve never seen this 1996 movie about a couple of brothers who manage an Italian restaurant, please do. It’s a brilliant movie – and its quiet climax is one of the best cinematic real-time scenes since the end of Shane. Stanley Tucci stars, co-wrote and co-directed, Tony Shalhoub plays his temperamental sibling, and we see them on one night when an influential guest is coming whose response to their special menu may make or break their restaurant. The food is tantalizingly rich, and so is the supporting cast: Ian Holm, Minnie Driver, Allison Janney and Isabella Rossellini.

TCM, 1:45 a.m. ET

George A. Romero directed this 1968 zombie film, the granddaddy of the genre – and a movie which, despite its very low budget, has a hand-held, scary approach that fits right in with today’s modern equivalents.
