It’s taken this long, but tonight the on-again, off-again flirtation between the title characters rises to a new level: Bob takes Abishola on an actual date. But where? And how does it go? And, going straight to a place where a lot of this show’s humor is generated, what does her family think?
HBO, 9:00 p.m. ET
SERIES FINALE: This is the end of the latest series from David Simon and company – which means, for sure, it’s the night’s very best bet. And though James Franco had a flashy dual role for much of The Deuce, the runaway star has turned out to be Maggie Gyllenhaal. Her character of Candy started this series as a defiantly independent street prostitute (pictured), and is ending it as a defiantly independent filmmaker of female erotica.
HBO, 10:00 p.m. ET
Mirren, Mirren, on the wall, who’s the best actress of them all? Well, Helen, you’re up there – but this new historical miniseries, in which she plays Russia’s last Empress, isn’t. It’s not written engagingly or at all imaginatively, and Mirren really is the principal season to watch, tonight’s second episode or beyond. If you must. This is one Mirren project, though, that is nota must-see.
