DC'S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW

SERIES PREMIERE: Part 2 of 2. This still is a warning, not a recommendation. This new series has lofty ambitions, but begins as a messy mélange of action, exposition and nonsense. Maybe it’ll level out once these legends actually begin their mission. Otherwise, this brand new CW comic-book series from the DC Comics universe soon will be Legends of yesterday.

 
  
 
 
AMERICAN IDOL

Fox, 8:00 p.m. ET

Yesterday’s “Lines of 10” outing, the first day of Hollywood Week on this final season of American Idol, was enjoyable and emotional, as usual. The week continues, as does the winning of about half the contestants. Tough odds – but easy to watch.

 
  
 
 
2016 REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE

Fox News Channel, 9:00 p.m. ET

Things may change today and tonight, but as of this morning on Thursday, there’s a big change at tonight’s Republican National Debate, sponsored and televised by Fox News Channel. That’s right – Rand Paul is back on the main stage! Actually, and obviously, the big news is that Donald Trump has announced his intention to skip the debates, after FNC boss Roger Ailes refused Trump’s demand to remove Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly (pictured), who asked him some tough questions in the first debate, as moderator. We’ll know in less than a week, after the Iowa caucus results come in, whether that was a smart or dumb move – but it sure is another example of Trump knowing how to play, and fan the flames of, the media. FX, 10:00 p.m. ET

In tonight’s second episode, Baskets (Zach Galifianakis) gets a protégé – another rodeo clown who, for some reason, looks to Baskets for inspiration and instruction. It seems unlikely, and ill-advised – but they do make for a good pair. And Baskets, when not doing his silent clown act, could use someone else to talk to.

 
  
 
 
LATE SHOW WITH STEPHEN COLBERT

CBS, 11:35 p.m. ET

One of tonight’s guests intrigues me, and it’s not the regular sort of show-biz guest. It’s Erin Brockovich – the real activist herself, not Julia Roberts, who played her in the movies.
