BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Amazon Prime Video, 3:00 a.m. ET

SERIES FINALE: Because of off-screen issues related to this show’s star, Jeffrey Tambor, this final chapter of the Transparent story arrives with both something missing and something new. What’s missing is Tambor himself, who was the center of the series as Maura Pfefferman, a trans woman who came out after reaching retirement age. Tambor was being investigated after accusations of having sexually harassed members of the cast and crew, and quit the series. So this final episode of Transparent tries to solve this problem by writing about Maura’s death – but also addresses it, for some reason, by making this last Transparent entry a musical. Judith Light plays Shelly, the family’s original matriarch, and decides to deal with her grief by staging a musical based on her, and her family’s, life. Cue the orchestra – then exit, stage right. For a little background info on the episode, see Mike Hughes' Open Mike.

Netflix, 3:00 a.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Ryan Murphy was lured to Netflix with a very lucrative contract, and this new series is the initial result of that new arrangement. Ben Platt from Broadway’s Dear Evan Hansen stars as an ambitious high-schooler who runs for class president, and is faced with all manner of obstacles and opponents while pursuing his goal. Co-stars include some familiar faces from some of Murphy’s previous series – Gwyneth Paltrow from Glee, Dylan McDermott from American Horror Story – as well as strong performances from some younger players, especially Zoey Deutch and Lucy Boynton. The season is stolen, though, by Jessica Lange, who once again dives headfirst into what Murphy gives her, and is so much fun to watch. The series itself, less so: It’s quite uneven, in tone and with its content. But if you want to hear Platt sing, The Politician finds several opportunities to accommodate that – including in the premiere episode. For my full review on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross, listen today, or visit the Fresh Air website, and for a full review here at TVWW, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower.

HBO, 10:00 p.m. ET

This is the sort of news week that makes a show like this required viewing. And tonight, Maher has increased the potency even more by scheduling two of his most reliably talkative and provocative guests: author Salman Rushdie and former Massachusetts Democratic Congressional Representative Barney Frank.

BBC America, 11:00 p.m. ET

Before a new season – Norton’s 26th! – begins next week, Norton and BBC America present this fast-moving retrospective of the season just past. Expect to laugh. A lot.
