BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

This 1944 movie, directed by Otto Preminger, is a superb yet unusually bizarre example of detective film noir: Not only does the detective (Dana Andrews) become obsessed with the sultry and mercurial woman at the center of his murder investigation (Gene Tierney), but she’s center to the case because this woman, Laura, is the case. It’s her murder he’s trying to solve, yet she bewitches him from beyond the grave. Or so it seems. Anyway, this Laura is a much better viewing choice than what NBC is presenting directly opposite it in the same time slot: a same-week repeat of The Mysteries of Laura. This is much better.

BBC America, 9:00 p.m. ET

Those who avoided this series on the grounds that it’s silly science fiction really must take another look. Science fiction, yes. Silly, no – and this modern incarnation of Doctor Who, by the same folks who give us Sherlock, has ended up being both wittier and scarier than most TV shows in any genre. Tonight’s new episode introduces the “New Caretaker” – and a creepy new villain as well.

NBC, 10:00 p.m. ET

Oh, what a smart idea this is. Once a week, in prime time on Saturday nights, NBC will present a slightly truncated episode from a selected season of Saturday Night Live, That’s 40 episodes, with one selected episode per week. They’ll be shown out of order, but this new retrospective series is starting things off with a smartly selected episode from the inaugural 1975-76 season of SNL. The episode, the seventh in Season 1, features Richard Pryor as guest host, and Gil Scott-Heron, of “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” fame, as musical guest. Best moment, which is certain to be included: Chevy Chase giving a racially tinged word-association quiz to a prospective janitorial appointee, played by Pryor. If they play it in prime time, unedited, I’ll be surprised – but pleased.

Starz!, 11:00 p.m. ET

This is episode four of this behind-the-scenes moviemaking competition – and the final week of pre-production, in which Shane Dawson and Anna Martemucci (pictured) have to make their final decisions, artistic and otherwise, before the start of the actual filming of their respective projects.

NBC, 11:30 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: This is the first installment from Season 40 of Saturday Night Live – and I always feel a special kinship to this show, because a review of the premiere of the inaugural season, back in 1975, is how I talked my way into being an actual, for-a-real-newspaper television critic. It’s sobering to think that, as SNL begins year 40 in television, that I do, too. But here we both are, for now. For this new season, former SNL chameleonic cast member Darrell Hammond replaces the late Don Pardo, who served as announcer for the very first show, and for almost all the episodes afterward (when Pardo couldn’t perform his duties due to illness, it turns out, Hammond secretly replaced Pardo by mimicking his distinctive voice.) For tonight’s show, Hammond will use his own voice. Other things I know about the new show: Chris Pratt of Guardians of the Galaxy and Parks and Recreation is the guest host for this Season 40 opener. The musical guest is Ariana Grande. Cicely Strong is stepping down from “Weekend Update” and returning to the repertory cast full-time. Colin Jost has a new “Weekend Update” co-anchor in Michael Che, returning to SNL after a Daily Show stint. And five faces from last year are off the show: three (John Milhiser, Noel Wells, Brooks Wheelan) are gone, one (Michael O’Brien) is returning to the writers’ room, and one (Nasim Pedrad) is starring opposite former SNL writer John Mulaney on the upcoming Fox sitcom Mulaney.
