BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

AMC, 8:00 p.m. ET

I’ve seen this movie dozens of times. Chances are, you’ve seen this movie dozens of times. But there are reasons to watch it all over again. For one thing, it’s been since 1987 that Wallace Shawn, as Vizzini, first hatched his scheme to kidnap Robin Wright’s Buttercup. That’s 30 years ago. Thirty years ago! Inconceivable!

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

Ronald Colman, TCM’s star of the month, continues to be saluted tonight, and the opening film, from 1947, is a particularly bold and unusual showcase. In it, he stars as an actor whose latest part, opposite an actress played by Signe Hasso, is the title role in Shakespeare’s Othello – a role that begins to consume him, and overtake him, even when he’s not performing the scenes. (You know what they say: Once you go black…) He begins to lose touch with reality, gets insanely jealous, and becomes just as irrational and dangerous as Othello himself… Moor or less.

CW, 9:00 p.m. ET

This is the third episode of this British import – and, again, it’s mentioned because the Thursday night summertime TV options are so few and far between. So here’s the rundown, if you’re curious: Tonight the adventurers venture to Egypt, where they look for the long-lost tomb of Alexander the Great. It’s the only brush with Greatness this show is expected to offer.

HBO2, 9:05 p.m. ET

This 2016 comedy stars Zach Galifianakis and Isla Fisher as a suburban couple whose neighborhood makes room for some astoundingly attractive and mysterious new neighbors: a glamorous couple played by Jon Hamm and Gal Gadot. The comedy comes from the growing suspicion that this new couple, the Joneses, may be up to something, and may be spies. And they are. Hamm, of course, comes from Mad Men, and has the 007-style era and panache down cold. But Gadot is just as confidently charismatic, whether she’s dressed to kill or barely dressed. And it’s easy to see, from the way she matches Hamm and everyone else scene for scene, laugh for laugh, and especially action scene for action scene, how Gadot went from her small supporting role here to her career-making star turn as and in Wonder Woman.
