BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Sundance, 6:30 p.m. ET

Director John Boorman’s photography is stunning in this 1972 adventure film, which follows four suburban guys – tough-guy Lewis (Burt Reynolds) and his less macho buddies – on a getaway canoe trip down a river in Georgia, about to be flooded forever by the construction of a giant dam. After Drew (Ronny Cox) plays an impromptu guitar and banjo duet with a backwoods picker (pictured), Drew and Lewis, along with stuffy Ed (Jon Voight) and pudgy Bobby (Ned Beatty), take to the river in two canoes – and their lives are never the same again. Based on the poetic novel by James Dickey, Deliverance is a terrific film, with excellent performances, including Reynolds’ career-best work.

Various Networks, 7:00 p.m. ET

The NCAA tournament kicks into its Sweet 16 phase, which makes things a lot easier to keep track of, and describe, and watch. Four games are played tonight – two on CBS, two on TBS – and four more tomorrow. The first game tips off shortly after 7 p.m. ET on CBS, when Stanford (seeded No. 10 in the South) faces Dayton (No. 11). That may sound like a dull contest, but it’s not: so far in this tournament, both Stanford and Dayton have battled higher-seeded teams in every game, and beaten them all, including Stanford beating No. 2 Kansas and Dayton beating No. 3. Syracuse. At 7:45 p.m. ET on TBS, Wisconsin (No. 2 in the West) faces Baylor (No. 6). At 9:45 p.m. ET on CBS, Florida (No. 1 in the South) faces UCLA (No. 4). And finally, at 10:15 p.m. ET back on TBS, another top-seeded team, the West’s Arizona, faces San Diego State (No. 4).

Bravo, 8:00 p.m. ET

This Monday, How I Met Your Mother presents its finale episode on CBS. Tonight, in anticipation of that event, James Lipton invites the cast of that sitcom to join him for an unusually crowded edition of, among other things, Name Your Favorite Obscenity. Plus a little unexpected lip-locking...

Fox, 9:30 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: This series is co-created by Justin Halpern, and based on a comic memoir about his years growing up in a household with an outrageously outspoken father. It’s the second TV series to claim that distinction, and this new one, starring Christopher Meloni as the dad, is infinitely better than the earlier effort, CBS’s horrendous William Shatner sitcom, $#*! My Dad Says. Actually, Surviving Jack is surprisingly good, occasionally funny, and even, at times, unexpectedly tender. Rachael Harris adds a lot as the wife, Connor Buckley and Claudia Lee are solid as the young siblings, and the 1991 period setting adds a lot, too. Meloni, after all those years on Oz and Law & Order: SVU, is having a great time playing droll in a sitcom – just like former Homicide: Life on the Street star Andre Braugher on another Fox sitcom, Brooklyn Nine-Nine. For a full review, see Ed Bark’s Uncle Barky’s Bytes.

NBC, 10:00 p.m. ET

Tonight, in order to both visit his ailing mother and try to patch some problems with his own offspring, Zeek (Craig T. Nelson) takes the crew on a road trip. Close quarters lead to some intimate conversations – which is just what the doctor, or at least the patriarch, ordered.
