Netflix, 3:00 a.m. ET
SPECIAL PREMIERE: Black Mirror, the modern Twilight Zone/Outer Limits anthology series created by Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones, are behind this new special, which is a comedy deconstruction disguised as a documentary, replete with lots of news footage from the year 2020 that seem more farcical than anything writers could dream up. There are more than a dozen writers contributing to this Death to 2020 special, and Brooker, Jones and company manage to make it amusing and mind-blowing at the same time. And the guest cast, playing fictional but recognizable types and tropes, include Hugh Grant (pictured), Samuel L. Jackson, Lisa Kudrow, Cristin Milioti, and Leslie Jones – and those are just the funniest ones. Netflix didn’t make this show available for preview – perhaps there wasn’t time – but I saw it after Netflix dropped it this morning, and it’s fascinating. Laurence Fishburne narrates, and some of his droll lines are the most amusing, and/or frightening, of all.
Showtime, 9:00 p.m. ET
On holiday weekends, the broadcast networks pretty much go on their own holidays – but cable and streaming keep going. Which is good news, and why there’s a fresh episode of Shameless to watch on Showtime tonight. Well, a sort of fresh episode: It’s a new compilation of old scenes built around selected characters, as with tonight’s Shameless Hall of Fame: Ian & Mickey.
Showtime, 12:00 a.m. ET
…And also on Showtime, tonight on Your Honor, it is a fresh episode… Episode 4, tracking the fate of the young man asked to take the fall, and the prison time, for the judge’s son.
