BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

NBC, 8:00 p.m. ET

The live shows have begun, and the talent pool remains very strong. Jon Mero (pictured) was the first of the Top 12 to fall after last Tuesday’s “instant save” battle for survival, which leaves the show’s Top 11 from this cycle in 2017 to strut their stuff again this week. All but one will move on, very shortly, to the Top 10, where the air, and the competition, gets even more rarified.

CW, 8:00 p.m. ET

Tonight’s episode of Supergirl launches the first salvo in a four-show, two-day crossover story linking all four CW superhero action series from the DC Comics universe. The overall story is called “Crisis on Earth-X,” and it has heroes from the TV universe of DC adventures meeting up with counterparts from an alternate, twisted-mirror universe – kind of like the one several iterations of Star Trek would visit from time to time, where doppelgangers were, by and large, evil and sinister. On Supergirl, that means a version of Supergirl, played by Melissa Benoist, who’s darker in both attitude and wardrobe (pictured). And it means continuing to follow that interdimensional skirmish tonight at 9 ET on Arrow, with part three of the story televised Tuesday night at 8 ET on The Flash, and the conclusion televised Tuesday at 9 ET on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

This 1960 film is tonight’s prime-time centerpiece of TCM’s current overview of the history of blacklisting, and the end of that persecuting era, in Hollywood. Exodus, directed by Otto Preminger, is the story of the creation of the state of Israel in 1948. It’s based on the bestseller by Leon Uris, and is adapted for the screen by Dalton Trumbo – whose on-screen credit that year, along with his credited resurfacing the same year on Spartacus, effectively broke the blacklist by letting Trumbo, who refused to name names before the House Un-American Activities Committee, work once again under his own name. Paul Newman stars.

PBS, 9:30 p.m. ET

This new American Masters biography is shown at various times in various markets – but try and find and catch it where and when you can. Bob Hope, for his movies, his TV specials and his visits to the troops overseas, used to be ubiquitous, and among the most recognizable faces and entertainers in the world. Today, among the generation that’s the same age as my college students, he’s a virtual non-entity. Watching this documentary will help: attention must be paid. Check local listings.

HBO, 10:00 p.m. ET

This documentary, looking at the meth epidemic from the sides of both law enforcement and addicted citizens, is tough to watch. But in this case, that’s precisely the point…
