BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Fox, 8:00 p.m. ET

Six episodes in, and Gotham has solidified its early promise as one of the few new fall series worth a pledge of allegiance. It’s been clever, and visually stylish, from the start, and tonight’s episode continues the slow roll-out of familiar story lines and characters. Tonight, for example, a villain known as The Goat targets Gotham City’s privileged one-percenters – and one of them, young Bruce Wayne, defiantly decides not to run for cover.

NBC, 8:00 p.m. ET

From the beginning, this show has shone more of a spotlight on its judges than its contestants – and while no winner of The Voice has yet become famous, such judges as Blake Shelton, Adam Levine and others have gotten big career bumps, and widened their fan bases, by spinning around in those big red chairs. And tonight, a guest mentor arrives to steal even more of the spotlight: Taylor Swift, whose shift from country to pop with her just-released CD, and her Number One hit “Shake It Off,” ought to make any byplay with country star Shelton quite interesting.

CBS, 8:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: One of the unofficial slogans of TV Worth Watching is the simple but direct promise, “No Kardashians.” Permit me to break that promise this once – not as a recommendation, but as a notation. So far this season, while CBS was presenting its trial season of Thursday Night Football, the hit Thursday sitcom The Big Bang Theory was moved to Monday instead. That ended last week, along with CBS’s run of Thursday football games, at least for this season. So this week, Big Bang moves back to Thursday, and looks what takes its place: This vastly inferior sitcom, which launches its new season featuring a guest appearance by Kim Kardashian, who plays herself. I presume that’s because a) CBS wants big buzz for this non-Big Bang comedy, and b) Kim Kardashian is playing herself because, really, whom else does she have the talent to play?

CW, 9:00 p.m. ET

Poor Jane has found herself pregnant in an unusual, if not exactly miraculous, way, despite still being a virgin. But in this week’s episode, she suggests a change to her personal status – and not just on her Facebook profile. After what’s happened to her with the accidental artificial insemination, she makes an offer to her boyfriend that she’s previously withheld on principle: “Let’s have sex.” But if he agrees, the show may have to change its title. Gina Rodriguez stars.

HBO, 9:00 p.m. ET

Viewers may come to this biography of James Brown because it’s produced by Mick Jagger – but whatever brings them here, they’ll be happy they came. Directed by Alex Gibney, this documentary is so overflowing with vintage stills and clips, and fresh interviews and great stories, that – just like Brown himself – it starts in high gear, and never flags. And some of the stories are fascinating and fresh, at least to me. Like when Little Richard got a better contract and quit a concert tour, and Brown was hired to replace him – pretending to be Little Richard, because, in those pre-TV years, who knew? Jagger doesn’t show up until about 20 minutes in – and by then, the case for Brown already has been made, indelibly. You know the song "Moves Like Jagger"? Well, guess who Jagger moves like, and patterned himself after? For a full review, see Jonathan Storm's Eye of the Storm.
