BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Disney Channel, 8:00 p.m. ET

RETURN: One of cable TV’s oldest traditions, Shark Week, returns officially tonight at 8 ET with Tiger Beach, which explains and photographs tiger sharks as they attempt to find mates, and then mate, in the Bahamas. That new documentary is followed by two others: The Return of Monster Mako (9 p.m. ET) and Isle of Jaws (10 p.m. ET).

HBO, 9:00 p.m. ET

SEASON FINALE: Last week, Sansa defiantly but quietly told her adversary, “You are going to die tomorrow, Lord Bolton. Sleep well.” Even after other battles, and other epic deaths, in last week’s episode, tonight’s extended finale promises to deliver a lot. Season finales on this series usually do.

Showtime, 9:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: The latest season premiere of Ray Donovan, directed by titular star Liev Schreiber, jumps forward six months, with Ray healed from his gunshot wound, and six months sober. But the calm doesn’t last for long, and the sobriety doesn’t, either. By the end of the hour, Ray is in deep again – and his dad, Mickey (Jon Voight), is in even deeper. For more on Ray Donovan, see Alex Strachan's TV That Matters.

HBO, 10:15 p.m. ET

SEASON FINALE: The temporary solution to Pied Piper’s post-launch problems gets more complicated tonight – and a bit more out in the open.

HBO, 10:46 p.m. ET

SEASON FINALE: Selina (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) makes plans for the inauguration – but not, by any means, the plans she would have preferred.

HBO, 11:16 p.m. ET

Last week, John Oliver devoted much of his show to Brexit, and explaining what it meant, how complex it was, and why he was so hoping that British voters would opt to stay within the European Union. By a close vote, they didn’t – and I can’t wait for Oliver’s take on what that will mean, not only to his country back home, but to the U.S., whose election campaign is awash with the same sort of isolationist fervor.
