BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

PBS KIDS, Check local listings

All this week, in celebration of last week’s golden anniversary of the national public TV premiere of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, PBS KIDS is pairing five memorable episodes of the wonderful Fred Rogers children’s series with similarly themed episodes of its animated spiritual successor, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. The double features will play daily, one per day, all this week on PBS KIDS, so check your local listings. (Usually, they appear locally somewhere in the 8-10 a.m. ET block.)  Today, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood features the dual episode that includes the 15-minute segment “Daniel’s Fish Dies,” which is a new episode, specifically inspired by and echoing the original Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood episode from way back in 1970, “Death of a Goldfish.” If you have young kids, and maybe even if you don’t, make sure to watch, and record, all week’s double features. Check local listings.

NBC, 8:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: A new cycle of The Voice begins with a new judge – the best judge, I’m predicting, in the history of this and all other reality competition shows. That’s because the new judge joining The Voice tonight is former American Idol contestant, and winner, Kelly Clarkson.  Yes, I know, Jennifer Hudson, another Idol contestant, appeared on the most recent cycle of The Voice, but Hudson never seemed to fully warm up to the proceedings, and was more about herself, at times, than her team members. Clarkson, who won Idol the first time around (see photo; Hudson was a semifinalist), I expect – from her prior appearances as a guest adviser – has her heart and focus in the right place, and will come to The Voice all in.

Smithsonian, 8:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: Season 2 of the documentary series The Lost Tapes begins by looking at a civil rights leader who rose to prominence demanding change in the 1950s, and was assassinated in the 1960s. But the subject isn’t the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. – instead, it’s Malcolm X, the much more militant and less nonviolent activist who demanded better treatment from whites, and was very vocal in advocating for it. The Muslim minister was killed in 1965 – but before then, left behind a raft of speeches, recordings and TV news and talk-show appearances, some of which are collected here in this very absorbing, relatively rare look at the other major civil rights leader of the early 1960s. For a full review, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower.

CW, 9:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: It’s the start of Season 4 for this inventive and enjoyable zombie series, which is about as light as The Walking Dead is dark. Rose McIver stars as Liv Moore (get the spirit already?), a woman who works as a morgue attendant while solving crimes on the side – and solving them by ingesting samples of the brains of murder victims, temporarily absorbing their personalities, and using their trace memories to solve that person’s pre-corpse death. At the end of last season, the existence of zombies was revealed to the public. This season, as with the artificial plasma drink marketed to parts of the vampire population in True Blood, the entrepreneurs on iZombie begin offering a concoction of synthesized brains.

NBC, 10:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: This new NBC series is about three suburban women, beset by various problems and financial needs, who decided to team up and rob a local supermarket. And from there, when the local mob gets involved, they find themselves deeper and deeper into trouble, danger and lawlessness. Good Girls stars three positively delightful actresses: Christina Hendricks (Joan from Mad Men), Mae Whitman (Amber from Parenthood), and Retta (Donna on Parks and Recreation). But the tone of Good Girls is all over the place. It wants to be Breaking Bad in theory, but in practice it veers too wildly between what’s supposed to be actual, threatening menace and lighthearted women’s empowerment fun. For a full review, see Ed Bark's Uncle Barky's Bytes.
