BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

AXS TV, 2:15 p.m. ET

I’m still sad about Tom Petty’s death, and I’m not sure whether watching this will help or hurt – but it’s Petty, returning in 2014 to his old pre-stardom stomping ground of Gainesville, FL, running through a tight yet somehow loose set of hits and rarities. His lengthy set includes “Free Fallin’” and “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” and “American Girl,” but also “I Won’t Back Down,” the Traveling Wilburys’ “Handle Me with Care” and a cover of “I’m a Man.”

BET, 8:00 p.m. ET

Held Nov. 5 in Las Vegas, the 2017 Soul Train Awards is hosted by Erykah Badu (pictured), and features Jessie J, Method Man, Toni Braxton, and others. Come for the music, stay for the fashion and the dancing. Or vice versa.

AMC, 9:00 p.m. ET

The title of tonight’s new episode is “The King, the Widow and Rick.” Rick is, of course, this show’s central hero (played by Andrew Lincoln, pictured), last seen walking alone, with his assault rifle, to parts unknown – but dangerous parts, no matter where he’s heading. The King is Ezekiel (Khary Payton), whose regal confidence has been shattered after the latest battle in this multi-outpost war for dominance and survival. And the Widow is Maggie (Lauren Cohan), who, without her viciously murdered husband Glenn, is proving to be one of the strongest forces left in this post-apocalyptic world.

Showtime, 9:00 p.m. ET

Fiona seems to be coping with all her new responsibilities, at home as well as at work, but tonight she gets thrown for a loop as an old love re-enters her life – with a message. Meanwhile, Frank actually seems intent on self-improvement, and almost any direction he takes will be a good one. Even working at a car wash. After all, it worked for Walter White, right?

Smithsonian, 9:00 p.m. ET

This latest edition of Smithsonian’s well-researched The Lost Tapes revisits the Seventies case of 19-year-old newspaper heiress Patty Hearst, who was kidnapped in 1974 by a ramshackle radical group calling itself the Symbionese Liberation Army. The granddaughter of publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst was held by the SLA for 19 months, during which she went from being held captive in a dark closet to participating in one of their bank robberies as an armed assailant. Lost Tapes includes audio recordings made by both Patty Hearst and her kidnappers, as well as newly unearthed vintage local news footage. For a full review, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower.

BBC America, 10:00 p.m. ET

DOCUMENTARY PREMIERE: Nigel Cole directs this new 70-minute documentary, which treads some of the same territory explored in Springsteen’s current sold-out Broadway show: a retrospective look at the songwriter’s life, influences and music.

HBO, 10:00 p.m. ET

Tonight’s new episode is called “The Shucker” – and you shouldn’t miss it, because after all these years without Curb Your Enthusiasm, the show is about to vanish again. Next week is the season finale, “Fatwa!,” which means that tonight’s installment is Larry David’s penultimate Curb episode of 2017.
