BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Golf Channel, 3:00 p.m. ET

Why point out obscure Golf Channel coverage of a low-level PGA tournament on opening day? Because it’s part of an ongoing, unpredictable story: the potential, but by no means guaranteed, comeback of Tiger Woods. Woods has attempted comebacks several times before, trying to bounce back after a public scandal, health problems, back surgery, and an errant swing. But since turning professional, he’s never been away from a PGA tournament as long as he has here – 17 months. And supposedly, he feels both his health, and his swing, are very good. Today, he tees off competitively in a PGA event for the first time since August 2015 – and coverage begins today on the Golf Channel.

CW, 9:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Boy, is this weird – but then again, Archie comics, on which this new CW teen series is based, always were weird anyway. When the comic-book series launched, Archie took place in some sort of semi-retro world of malt shops and letter sweaters – part Happy Days, part Pleasantville, with Archie Andrews as the all-American boy eternally torn between sweet blonde Betty and brunette vixen Veronica. For this new TV version, the malt shop and ponytails are still in vogue, but so are smartphones – and the idyllic small-town spell of this Riverdale hides a Blue Velvet vibe of sinister mystery simmering underneath. Like Twin Peaks, this new series begins with the murder of a popular high-school student, and spins out from there. How odd is this Archie reboot? So odd that Betty, played by Lili Reinhart, is her own blonde vs. brunette dichotomy: occasionally dressing up, and acting, like her wild-child dead sister, in a dual-personality twist another character refers to as “Dr. Jekyll and Mistress Hyde.” Riverdale also stars K.J. Apa as Archie, Camilla Mendes as Betty, and, as some of the town parents, former teen-TV stars from a previous generation: Luke Perry from Beverly Hills 90210 and Madchen Amick from Twin Peaks. Is this new series any good? I’m not convinced – but it’s so strange, I’ll keep watching for a while. And I encourage you to do as well, at least through episode three, when brunette Betty makes her first bizarre appearance. For full reviews, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower and Ed Bark's Uncle Barky's Bytes.

FX, 10:00 p.m. ET

Episode two of this second season of Baskets continues, and both the characters played by Zach Galifianakis are having a fairly rough time of it. Good thing the twins have their mom, played by Louie Anderson, for moral support – or is it?

Spike, 10:00 p.m. ET

Today seems to be the day for ambivalent recommendations of very weird TV. Tonight’s installment of Lip Sync Battle, for example, features Milla Jovovich doing battle with her Resident Evil: The Final Chapter co-star Ruby Rose. And what’s so weird here is that Jovovich commits so completely to imitating Billy Idol as she lip-syncs to his “White Wedding” that her performance, like her wardrobe, is nothing to sneer at.

CBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

Last-minute network addition: CBS is pre-empting its regularly scheduled programming at 9 p.m. ET tonight to present an instant special honoring Mary Tyler Moore. Gayle King and her best friend, Oprah Winfrey, are among those paying tribute. For our tributes here at TVWW, read Ed Bark’s Uncle Barky’s Bytes, David Hinckley’s All Along the Watchtower, and my own Bianculli’s Blog.
