THE VOICE

NBC, 8:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: Part 2 of 2. Last night’s episode established the rapport, and tensions, among this year’s quartet of judges: veterans Blake Shelton and Adam Levine, and relative newbies Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson. Of the four, former American Idol winner’s enthusiasm and cockiness plays well, while Hudson’s wobbles between playful and egotistical. But overall, it’s a comfortable chemistry, and these early “Blind Audition Rounds” are among the show’s most entertaining – and surprising.

 
  
 
 
THE GIFTED

Fox, 8:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: To begin Season 2, The Gifted starts with a realignment of the power structure within the fugitive mutant community – then jumps forward in time six months, to explore the effects of that change in leadership. Season 1 of The Gifted was one of the better new sci-fi shows probing the minority-treatment theme by looking at human’s wariness of mutants – a theme even more timely as we begin Season 2.

NBC, 9:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: One of the few remaining broadcast TV dramas of recent seasons to generate buzz and acclaim, this NBC series returns for Season 3. Now that it’s explained the cause of Jack’s death, it’s focusing on new mysteries – including one that will be teased, and a bit more explained, in tonight’s season premiere episode.

CBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: This is not a recommendation. It’s worth noting, so I’m noting it, that longtime NBC executive producer Dick Wolf, creator of the Law & Order and Chicago franchises for that network, is generating a new series – for CBS this time, and with an even shorter title than the classic ABC series The F.B.I. FX, 11:30 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: This Australian import is a fast-paced drama series created by and starring Scott Ryan, and fans of HBO’s Barry will recognize the premise: a burned-out hit man trying to quit his violent and deadly line of work, while keeping that career separate from his blossoming private life. Mr Inbetween has neither a period nor a hyphen in its title, and that same speed-demon approach applies to its storytelling style as well. David Bianculli has been a TV critic since 1975, including a 14-year stint at the New York Daily News, and sees no reason to stop now. Currently, he's TV critic for NPR's Fresh Air with Terry Gross, and is an occasional substitute host for that show. He's also an author and teaches TV and film history at New Jersey's Rowan University.
