BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Amazon Prime Video, 3:00 a.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: For a goofy, spoofy comic-book superhero, the Tick is surprisingly persistent. First there was an animated TV show based on the comic book in 1994, then a very funny live-action version of The Tick, starring Patrick Warburton in the title role, in 2001. And now, on Amazon, comes a new live-action version, in 2017. That’s one TV series version of The Tick per decade, for three consecutive decades. Which begs the question: Huh? Regardless, this version – six episodes of which are unveiled on Amazon today – is fun enough to watch, and, like the others, is overseen by the original cartoonist, Ben Englund. So all these series hit the right tone, though this new one shifts focus to the human sidekick, Arthur (Griffin Newman), who teams up with a bullet-proof, none-too-bright costumed hero known as The Tick (Peter Serafinowicz). Their major nemeses, first time around, include the Terror (played by Jackie Earle Haley with a Joker-like relish) and his henchwoman, Ms. Lint (Yara Martinez from Jane the Virgin). Of all the Tick iterations to date, this is the one with the biggest budget and most visual flair – and Serafinowicz plays the hero, no doubt intentionally, with more than a small nod to the playful posturing of Adam West, TV’s original campy Batman.  For a full review, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower.

Netflix, 3:00 a.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: This is not a recommendation. Chuck Lorre and David Javerbaum are behind this new Netflix sitcom, which stubbornly – and in this case, not at all effectively – continues the multi-camera, live-audience approach to situation comedy. Kathy Bates plays the owner of a legal California marijuana dispensary, but though the setting is new for a sitcom, the characters, and jokes, are anything but. Even with some animation thrown in, this new sitcom deserves to be thrown out. You may be tempted, as was I, to take this comedy voyage because of the teaming of Bates and Lorre – but trust me. It’s a bad trip. For a full review, see Ed Bark's Uncle Barky's Bytes.

Showtime, 9:00 p.m. ET

Showtime’s latest music documentary looks at the life, the music, and the unfortunate early death of Whitney Houston – who, this documentary shows, masked a lot of sadness in her life, onstage as well as off. For a full review, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower.

HBO, 10:00 p.m. ET

Today’s scheduled guests include Jesse Jackson, Frank Bruni, and Paul Begala.

Great breakdown! Having well-written television like this makes evening downtime so much more engaging. When I'm taking a break between episodes or just relaxing after a long day of screen time, I usually unwind for a bit with a few casual rounds on [chicken road](https://chickenroad.gr.com/) before starting the next season. Really appreciate the thoughtful recommendations on this site!
