BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

NBC, 8:00 p.m. ET

The Kotex ad seen in the accompanying picture is only one of the international ads featured in tonight’s special – which, of course, is interrupted by more commercials. I know, it sounds absurd, but there’s usually at least one ad from abroad wild and crazy enough to make it worth the trouble of watching. And sitting through all the other commercials.

Sundance, 8:00 p.m. ET

This 1997 movie is a masterpiece of modern film noir, and features all the necessary elements, including an intricate plot, unexpected double-crosses, charismatic but tough protagonists and antagonists, and a drop-dead-gorgeous femme fatale. Curtis Hanson directed this moody, slippery adaptation of the James Ellroy novel, and cast it with leads who would quickly become bigger stars: Russell Crowe, Kevin Spacey and Guy Pearce. And the femme? Kim Basinger, delivering a career-best performance.

DirecTV Audience Network, 9:00 p.m. ET

So far in this final season, Patty (Glenn Close) has made all the right moves, and Ellen (Rose Byrne) has played right into her hands – getting a judge dismissed that actually would have hurt Patty’s case, and being fed misinformation from someone Patty knew better than to trust. But as things get closer to an actual court date, expect Ellen to get her licks in – and to make things tough for Patty, at least for a while.

BBC America, 10:00 p.m. ET

This is the third and final Ab Fab special presented to honor the show’s 20th anniversary, with Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley still misbehaving as Edina and Patsy. This last special of the bunch finds them realizing, at the very last minute, that the 2012 Summer Olympics are in their midst, and setting out to join in the revelry. Even when the comedy flags a little, there’s something very funny about these two characters and their clueless excesses. Also shown simultaneously on Logo.

DirecTV Audience Network, 10:00 p.m. ET

Episode 2 of this limited series was another impressively tender and involving one, and Chloe Sevigny has made this role her own – no mean feat, since she’s playing a transgender assassin (by which, to be clear, I do not mean someone who murders transgenders). And this week, we see her having more difficulty than usual doing her “day job,” and finding herself hunted as well as hunter.
