BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Amazon Prime Video, 3:00 a.m. ET

MINISERIES PREMIERE: Peter Weir shot his haunting version of Picnic at Hanging Rock on location in 1975, making a dreamily moody movie in Australia that gave him, and the Australian movie industry, a major boost. Based on a short novel that some people (but not all) believe was based on fact, it now stars Natalie Dormer as Mrs. Appleyard – the owner of a young girls’ finishing school in 1900, where, on Valentine’s Day, some of her students, and one of her teachers, mysteriously disappeared during a holiday picnic. For my full review on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross, visit the Fresh Air website.

Netflix, 3:00 a.m. ET

SPECIAL PREMIERE: Steve Martin and Martin Short have been amigos ever since Three Amigos, and their easy rapport translates smoothly, and hilariously, into their duet music and comedy performances together – which they’ve done, in various venues and using various excuses for teaming up, for years now. This TV special codifies some of their punch lines, set pieces and byplay, and has fun from the start. (Martin introduces Short as “as much fun as a barrel of monkeys… but that’s it.”) But be certain that, when it comes to these two comic masters, there’s a lot more where this came from. I smell a series of specials, please.

ESPN, 8:30 p.m. ET

This is Game 6 in the Eastern conference championship, and the Boston Celtics have a 3-2 edge in games against the Cleveland Cavaliers. One more win, and the Celtics are in the 2018 NBA Finals. However, If LeBron James and the Cavaliers can bounce back from last night’s listless loss, win tonight’s game and tie the series, then Game 7, with the entrance to the finals on the line, will be played Sunday night.

BBC America, 11:00 p.m. ET

Tonight’s guests: Emilia Clarke, David Tennant, Gloria Estefan and others.
