BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Netflix, 3:00 a.m. ET

SERIES RETURN: Netflix has gone the TV series revival route before – quite gloriously with new episodes of Arrested Development, and quite horribly with its sequel sitcom series, Fuller House. But now, today, comes four new 90-minute installments of Gilmore Girls, generated by series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, returning to her TV baby to craft four new reunion episodes tied to the seasons: “Winter,” “Spring,” “Summer” and “Fall.” (In a different order, that was the name of the Indian princess on Howdy Doody.) Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel are back as the fast-talking mother-daughter besties Lorelai and Rory, and most everyone else, save for the late Edward Herrmann as the family patriarch, are back too, including the now-a-big-star supporting player Melissa McCarthy as Sookie. Rory’s various exes, also more famous since the original days of Gilmore Girls on WB and the CW (from 2000 to 2007), make appearances as well: Jared Padalecki (Supernatural), Milo Ventimiglia (This Is Us), and Matt Czuchry (The Good Wife).

SERIES PREMIERE: Here’s an exotic new series worth a sample. It’s a new Brazilian series, produced by Netflix and filmed in Brazil, telling of a future in which people are given the opportunity to cross from a land of devastation into a land of plenty. It’s an arduous journey, however, that results in failure for 97 percent of those who attempt it. Bianca Comparato stars.

Netflix, 3:00 a.m. ET

SPECIAL PREMIERE: In this new Netflix special – one of three new Netflix offerings unveiled today – the co-anchor of the current “Weekend Update” news satire on NBC’s Saturday Night Live gets to step out from behind his fake news desk (well, the desk is real; only the news is fake) and deliver a one-man standup routine. And an uncensored one at that.

NBC, 8:00 p.m. ET

How time flies. This is the golden anniversary of this 1966 animated holiday special, starring Boris Karloff as both the narrator and the Grinch. It’s co-directed by Chuck Jones, who created Wile E. Coyote and developed Bugs Bunny, and the voice of Cindy Lou Who is provided by June Foray, who also provided the classic voice of Rocky the Flying Squirrel on Rocky and His Friends and The Bullwinkle Show.

CBS, 8:00 p.m. ET

And this other early holiday special will turn 50 in 2019, so it’s a major oldie too (as am I, because I saw it back in 1969). Jimmy Durante narrates. And Frosty, long before Olaf, is the snowman with a mission.
